I'm happy with my 82# MG Tour on my larger boat but I've just bought an 11' aluminum jon boat for electric waterways. I plan to add another quick-release mounting plate to the jon and switch the MG between the two.
For those ponds and creeks where I don't need the endurance of 24v or the power of 82lb, can I just wire it for 12v and one battery? Even if I get 30% of the performance, it would be enough.
Or am I gonna mess up something digital that always needs 24v?

It'd be like running on your big boat with one bad battery. You'll end up pulling more current through the wiring and brushes though. This will put more wear on the brushes and might lead to a premature failure of the control board. Not sure what current it's rated at. Most components are designed to accept a range of operating conditions that are out of the "norm". The question would be for how long though.

I'd pick up a small hand steer for the jon boat. Just my $.02.

Only if there is a 12/24 switch.

Like BassBuff said, it will cause excess wear & tear.  I know of someone who did...didn't take long.  I have a jon boat set up for no gas motor lakes and it has its own bow mount TM & batteries.  Some of the lakes I fish it takes 30-45 minutes on the TM to get there.  My jon boat also has 2 transom mount at 55# each.

If you are going to go through all the trouble of a Quick Release and rotating the TM between boats, why not add one more battery in the Jon Boat?

the trolling motor will also be pulling double the amps.  Causing connections, wires, windings, etc. to burn out.

As I expected:
1) Don't mess with anything going good
2) Ask a silly question on this forum and get a good range of intelligent answers!
Thanks very much.
