Hey guys,

I know this is probably beating a dead horse but I am completely dumbfounded when it comes to this stuff.  I just bought a hummingbird 898 and I have no clue where I'm going to mount the unit.  There isn't really a flat surface on my boat by the console and the console is obviously not big enough.  I have a 2009 skeeter sx 190.  I have an idea of where to mount the transducer from looking at other pictures, however, someone was saying that if you dont mount it in the right place, when you run it will flip up.  I have a factory jackplate on my skeeter, so do I just mount it where I've seen other people mount it with the pictures even though its a different size boat and motor?  Thanks in advance for the help.

Did you get the SI version? If you need some help installing the unit give me a holler! ;)

airforcechief11

Yeah, I got the 898c SI combo Bassbuff.  I'm pretty excited and I would greatly APPRECIATE some help installing this thing!  lol...  I was considering on taking it to Reeves or bass pro but didn't really want to pay the extra money associated with installing it.  Besides, it would be a great experience for me to install it with someone.   :help:

Mount it off the jackplate. That's the simpliest and easiest way. On a Skeeter there is a hole into the boat where the rub rail cover is remove it and clean out silicone and your inside the boat. With a Jackplate mount you'll need a 2D transducer to get high speed and the Splitter Cable: AS SI DB Y to connect with the XP 9 20 transducer you epxoy to shoot thru the hull.

I've come to realize that I'm a complete idiot when it comes to this so I'm gonna let the professionals handle it.  ~b~  I'm not sure where they are mounting it, my roomate is dropping it off today for me and i'll pick it up this afternoon.  I'll put some pictures up afterwards.  Hopefully its right.  However, what your saying is if they mount it to the jackplate, then I can't use the 2d?  only the side/down imaging? :help:

You can use 2D but when off plane but when you get on plane the transduicer will be out of the water. No sonar can work shooting thru air or turbulated water. So to resolve this when mountign the transducer for protection most will add a 2D only transducer to shoot thru the hull and get 2D readings at all speeds. Using the Y Cable it will split the readings to the second 2D only transducer. DOes this make it clear as mud?

airforcechief11

Yeah, I know exactly what your saying now.  Thanks Dougv!

Use the furnished transom mounted transducer and you will not need different transducers or selector switch. Mine works fine and does not flip up after i mounted it as directed by humminbird.

Looks good hope it works on plane being that high above bottom of boat. Let us know how it works. Screen looks good on the ram mount.

Install looks good but you will need a 2D transducer to get on plane speed readings where the transducer is mounted there.

My transom looks alot like yours. I was wandering can I mount mine to that ground bar that goes across. Or would that cause an issue with the unit.
