These Fire Extinguishers May Not Put Out The Fire
Recall for Affected Models Include Mariner 10, Mariner 110, Mariner 5, and Mariner 5 G
ALEXANDRIA, VA, March 17, 2015 – As boaters are about to begin the spring ritual of getting their boats ready for the season, Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) is advising they will need to pay extra attention to the fire extinguishers aboard. A well-known fire extinguisher manufacturer, Kidde, in conjunction with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), has announced a voluntary recall to replace certain Kidde fire extinguisher units. A faulty valve component can cause the disposable fire extinguishers not to fully discharge when the lever is repeatedly pressed and released during a fire emergency, posing a risk of injury. About 4.6 million extinguishers are affected that were sold nationwide between August 2013 and November 2014.

According to the CPSC, Kidde has received 11 reports of fire extinguishers that failed to discharge, but no injuries have been reported. A February 12, 2015 safety notice from Kidde stated, "Due to our commitment to quality and safety, we have corrected the issue for production going forward, and are working with customers to obtain all recalled units currently in stock."
Thirty-one models of the disposable fire extinguishers are affected. The extinguishers are red, white, or silver with black plastic valves and ABC or BC rated and manufactured in Mexico between July 23, 2013 and October 15, 2014 and sold at department, home, and hardware stores as well as some marine supply stores. Some of the affected extinguisher models were designed for the boating market and have a nameplate on the front with the names Mariner 10, Mariner 110, Mariner 5, and Mariner 5 G.

URGENT USCG MARINE SAFETY ALERT#03-16
Kannad Marine has issued a recall of all SAFELINK EPIRBs due to a possible defect that could result in the beacon not operating in emergency situations.  If you own or use a SAFELINK EPIRB automatic or manual model as identified in the referenced SAFELINK Recall Safety Notice you should NOT use it as a primary Search and Rescue beacon onboard your vessel.
Kannad recommends that all owners of SAFELINK EPIRBs register their ownership, location and contact details via the dedicated website: http://www.safelinkepirbsupport.co.uk .  The website will first ask you to enter your SAFELINK EPIRB's CSN number which is located on the EPIRB's label. (See image on attachment.)  Once the CSN is entered an additional webpage will open where more detailed owner information is entered to arrange provision of a replacement EPIRB.
The Coast Guard strongly recommends that all owners and users of the Kannad SAFELINK EPIRBs seek replacement devices as soon as possible and NOT to use it as a primary Search and Rescue beacon onboard your vessel....

SAFETY ADVISORY: RBS ALERT
Smoke Distress Signal Recall

The V-Directorate wants to make our members aware of an URGENT USCG MARINE SAFETY ALERT #04-16.
The Coast Guard has withdrawn the Certificate of Approval for NAMMO LIAB AB Orange Hand Smoke Distress Signal, due to risk of spontaneous combustion when dropped.
These smoke signals may be labeled and marketed as "Polar MK 4" by NAMMO LIAB AB or as "IKAROS" by Hansson Pyrotech. "IKAROS" Hansson Pyrotech is the more current manufacturing name. There are approximately 2,790 signals with the potentially defect in the US market.
Any signal manufactured after October 2013 must be properly disposed of and replaced with a product that satisfies the vessel's carriage requirements.

URGENT USCG MARINE SAFETY ALERT

Walter Kidde has issued a recall of 134 different models of Kidde brand fire extinguishers manufactured between January 1, 1973 and August 15, 2017, including models that were previously recalled in March 2009 and February 2015. The extinguishers were sold in red, white and silver cylinder colors and are rated as either ABC or BC.  The extinguishers were sold  nationwide online and at  brick and mortar outlets.

The hazards associated with the recalled fire extinguishers are that they can become clogged or require excessive force to discharge and can fail to activate during a fire emergency.In addition, the nozzle can detach with enough force to pose an impact hazard.

All persons owning fire extinguishers are urged to read Coast Guard Marine Safety Alert 12-17 at:

All are also encouraged to check the fire extinguishers aboard your vessels, and in your vehicles and homes to determine whether they are subject to this recall.
