For those of you who don't have a fish finder.. like myself in my little Ole Jon Boat v~ . I put new anchor rope on my boat, I measured it out and every 5ft on the rope I took a perment marker and made a one inch black band around the rope.. I did this every 5 ft until I got to the end (mine is 25ft). When I let out the rope I just count, 1...2.. and a little okay so its about 12ft deep  ~b~ .. Helps in dark water to see if its 5ft or 15ft deep. Just be careful not to slam the anchor down to scare off the fish :) My anchor has been in some mud and nasty water but it it still easy to read my black bands.

That's a good ideaif you have a boat. Sort of like what they did onthe old river boats to check the depth of the river.

i made what we called a fathom rope. same idea but i marked mine every 1 foot and used a very light rope with a 1 oz weight. let it hit bottom then if you count the feet as you pull it up. course i would recomend this on big lakes. on smaller shallow lakes it works great
