Okay, I was fishing yesterday and my buddy got his spinnerbait caught in a tree. As a nice gesture I went to go get it for him and lifted the trolling motor when I got close. Oh yeah the tree was next to a nice rock wall. Can you see where this is going. Anyway, we got close and the wake from a boat came from behind and pushed us into the rock wall. Well, the skeg on the trolling motor snapped off. I guess it's better than the transducer or the fiberglass hull. Was just wondering if the skeg is absolutely necessary? I used it the rest of the day with no problems. What is the skeg for on a trolling motor? Any suggestions or advise would be appreciated.

I believe it's mainly there to protect the prop and/or transducer. I really can't see where it'd be of great use otherwise. Just my $.02
