so on this trip the whole family came. which meant we had to take the Explorer. Problem. My longest rods are 1 piece and push 7 ft long which if i put them in the back of the SUV would have hit me in th back of the head.

so i came up with a quick solution.

10' 3" PVC pipe
end cap
coupler
3" clean out screw cap end.

total cost about 15-20 bucks
just cut the main pipe to length you want and put end caps on.
Then strap to roof rack
Mine could hold up to 6 rods.

Awesome Tip! I've used the ol' "Missile Launcher" for several vacations. Hope you had a good trip.

I just wish someone offered a better, more permanent rooftop carrier that would hold your rods with the reels on them. It be so much more convenient  than shoving my sticks thru my trunk.

That looks like it works great, maybe you should have posted this a couple weeks ago  lo. I had to load my rods diagonally across my Escape for the ride down, they don't poke you in the head but 9 rods does a good job completely blocking out the rear-view mirror.
