I told my wife I wanted new cleats for the boat after I finished painting it. When she asked me why I told her the old ones were pitted and tarnished, and I didn't want to put them back on my freshly painted boat. She told me of a trick her mother had told her using aluminum foil and oven cleaner to scrub finished items.

I figured, "what the hell", and used an aluminum pie pan, 2 balled up pieces of aluminum foil, and spray oven cleaner. I couldn't believe it, it actually worked! Not perfect, but derned close. Definitely worth the 10 minutes to scrub all 4 cleats and reinstall.

Cool tip JP, but can you share a step-by-step of how you cleaned them??
