Can using super glue on lures give off a scent that makes fish not bite?

Kal-Kevin

Over the years I have used many different types of glue and never found it made a difference in the bite. So I got to say no!

I've used Super Glue (worm glue) to hold trailers on jigs for years and don't believe it to effect the bite

seems the consensus is no, I agree with the above, I have used various glues to glue knots and plastics.. no issues

I have to disagree.  I believe there is a scent to Super Glue.  I had found a product at an Orvis flying fishing store 6 years ago that does not have any scent.  The product is "Fishing Glue" from Carlson Tackle.  Can only purchase this product on their website. :-*

I've been a fly tyer & lure maker for many, many years and have used many types of adhesives, and paints. I've caught fish on flies & lures with all kinds of "scents" on them. This questions has come up several times on fly tying sites, because of the chemicals (moth balls & crystals) used to protect fur & feathers from insects & other vermin. Dyes also have scents, and are widely used. Folks still catch fish on flies despite the use of such chemicals.

When you touch a lure you leave your scent on it, it cannot be avoided. Unless that "scent" becomes soluble in water, I don't feel that fish can smell it. All materials have some smell to them, although the degree of what any animal can smell a scent depends on the animal. A fox or dog can smell things we can't, so it's likely a bass can also, but since we live in air & they in water, that will make a difference in what they can or cannot smell. If the "scent" is not soluble, it's not likely they'll smell it. However, it's also likely that even if they do smell it, unless they associate it with something that's harmful to them, why would they avoid it?

Scents also dissipate or dilute. Once an adhesive cures, it may not give off enough scent or such a diluted scent to be a concern. Even if bass, or other fish can discern specific scents, such as glues, there's no way of telling if it's deterring to them. I would bet there are many things in water that bass & other fish can smell, that they have no idea what the scent is, and it doesn't bother them.

It only makes sense that if they'll bite a lure or bait, even after the use of a specific glue, then it's not something that bothers them.  ~shade

I use this product and buy it from a local tackleshop, so it is available outside the website. that being said the nozzle sucks, it stays full of glue after each use and firms up, i have to clear it after each use.. good product though

bass.junky I get the one with a brush applicator.  it works great and keeps a long time.  You are right the nozzle gets full of glue and drys up.  Not good.
