Sailor Jerry

Hey guys!

New to the forum and am looking for some good input from you experts.  I just got back into the sport two years ago and have been using my brothers pole and am needing to upgrade.  I don't like baitcasters, because, well, I don't know how to use them.  I've only had good luck with open face spinner reels which I do enjoy using.  Now, I'm not looking for anything to expensive and I will most likely be doing offshore fishing as I don't have access to a boat very often.

I usually, when fishing from shore, use a spinner bait or the fake crawdads/colored worms.

Good, bad, or ugly...I catch fish with them, and some pretty sizeable.

Just need some input on what a good reel would be!

Well I would recommend learning how to use a baitcaster because by only using spinning set-ups you are defiantly shorting yourself but...

If you want a good, durable spinning reel take a look at the Abu Cardnal 300 and the Mitchell 300xe.  I have used both of these reels quite a bit and really like them. Both reels run about 40 bucks. I also picked up a Shimano Sahara earlier this year and it has performed well in less than ideal conditions. The Sahara is about $80 and may be outta your price range, so you could also look at some of the cheaper Shimano lines.

Thanks for the input Josh.

$80 isn't out of the price range but isn't what I would consider "needed" at this point for me.  The $40 are seeming better :)

Anyone else?  :help:

Take  a look at the okuma avenger line.  The A30 is a nice spinning reel that has served me very well going on 4 years now.  in fact you can get a A30 rod and reel combo for about 60 bucks.  google search AV-662M-30a.

oh and welcome to Ultimate Bass!

In the end, it's not going to matter how many breaths you took, but how many moments took your breath away.

My 2 cent is you get what you pay for. Buy the best you can afford. The quality and smoothness of a reel and in some cases the name brand will cost you more. In the long run that reel will last, and it will be kinder to you casting arm. I tend to buy mid and high end priced reels. Mostly Shimano reels. In addition to the other reels listed, the Shimano Symetre spinning reels are also a outstanding mid price reel. Any of the Shimano Carado series casting reels are classic; hard to beat in quality, casting, pounds of drag pull, and are just a outstanding value. Everyone has their favorites those are mine.
