Had a few knicked or bent reeds in my motor, so I opted to replace them with the Boyesen reeds due to them being roughly $30 cheaper than stock, and I had the potential to get a little power/driveability from them. After installing them, I followed the Boyesen instructions, which reccomended that I back off the idle air screw 1 full turn. The motor now cranks, but idles poorly, misses while trying to get on plane (if it can), and falls off hard while on the big end. There is also a lot of gas coming back out of the carbs into the cowling and down into the water. I put the idle screw back were it was stock and it still does the same. After a few minutes of running, the motor will no longer crank until it sits for a while. Obviouslly its flooding, but I can't believe it's this bad with just a reed swap. I'm thinking of just going back to stock, but I'd like to get these going smoothly if at all possible. Any advice? Motor is a 120 force. 96' model.

My money says while you had the intake off, the floats in the carbs dried out and stuck.  If the gas is flowing out of the carbs, it is not the reeds that is causing it.  Time to tear the carbs down.

The bowl seals were rotted, so I did replace those. I also checked all the passages/jets and made sure they were clean. I did not replace the floats nor the needles since they were moving, but it is possible that one or both floats could be bad. If they dried out, then cracked, they could be filling with fuel causing them to hang open. A new carb kit could be an easy try.

YOU SAID THERE WAS ALOT OF FUEL COMING OUT OF THE CARBS. DOES FUEL LEAK FROM THE CARBS WHEN YOU GENTLY SQUEEZE THE FUEL BULB, IF SO YOU HAVE CARB PROBLEMS, IF NOT YOUR NEW REEDS MIGHT NOT BE SEALING WELL DUE TO IMPROPER INSTALLATION. IF YOU ARE STILL HAVING PROBLEMS PLEASE CALL ME AT 800-329-2725 WHEN YOUR BY THE MOTOR SO WE CAN LOOK AND POSSIBLY TROUBLE SHOOT TOGETHER.

I appreciate the help Chris, but I sold this boat almost 2 years ago. lo Turns out it needed the carbs rebuilt. After that it ran like a raped ape.
