I'm looking a buying a 2006 Nitro 482 w/ Merc 150 optimax.  Even though it is rated for it, 150 just seems like a lot of motor for the 482.  Does anyone have this particular combination?   If so how does it handle at WOT?  Any chine-walking?  Don't want to buy a boat with a 150 and only be able to use 75% of it.

I have a 2007 482 which was actually ordered with a 150 opti, and then the original buyer dropped out after the boat was delivered.  When I decided to buy the boat I had the dealer pull the 150 off and put on a 115 instead, even though everyone I knew told me it was a mistake and I would regret it later.  Here's why.....when I first started shopping for a new boat I was looking at the 750 and the 482.  One of the local dealers here in Tampa told me they could not sell the 2008 750's or 482's (which are now called Z6) with anything more than the 115.  His explanation was that Nitro had changed the rating due to "some problems".  I'm not sure if there were problems with that much weight on the transom, or if several accidents occurred, etc. but I did call Nitro directly and they confirmed that the newer models of both of those boats would only come with a 90 or 115 hp motor.  No one was willing to give specifics as to why but I have to assume they were covering their backsides for a good reason.  Anyway, with the 115 I can get 52 mph clocked with GPS, and with gas prices where they are that's good enough for me.  The handling is great with no chine walk or anything like that at those low speeds.  It ain't a speedster, but I fish locally with a small club and don't need a setup like an Elite Series pro.  I'm loving the boat so far and am satisfied with the decision to go with the 115 instead of the 150.  I'd definitely drive the boat first before buying to see how it runs and maybe do a little homework to see why they lowered the rating to 130 after '07 even though it's the same hull.

Thats some good advice fishin geek,  I will add this based on J.D.'s comment about only using 75% of the motor.

If thats all the boat will let you use because of control thats an issue, however only using 75% of the power of the motor you save gas.  with a 115 or 130 going balls out at WOT you will burn more fuel that with a 150 up and running on pad and getting off the gas at a nice smooth ride.  As so if you should need the extra MPH you will now you have it when you need it.   :)

Ok, so I've got this boat (2006 482) at my house to try out over the weekend (guy selling it is a friend of mine), and he told me that last time he had it out the trolling motor was acting up (motor guide pro 70lb)...So last night I turned it on and hit the button and it came on just fine, though the batteries were a little low.  So I switch through all the speeds and just let the prop spin freely, then I grabbed the prop with my and and hit the button just to see what kind of "kick" it had and for a second I could feel it then nothing...so I figured it my have tripped the breaker on the battery connection, but it turned out not to be the case.  I know that batteries still had some juice from the moments prior.  Any clue as to why I suddenly have no power?  Keep in mind too that this boat has been sitting up for almost a year.

Bad plug connection more than likely. If it's not the plug than it may be the contacts in the foot of the motor. Go with the easy stuff first. Try by passing your plug and go straight to the batteries. If nothing than take an ohm meter an check the switches. If there are no problems then it's going to more than likely be the contacts in the foot of the motor.

I have the same TM on my 482 and after the first couple of hours of use had the same problem.  It ended up being the switch on the foot control, and the dealer fixed me right up.  You might want to make sure the right in line breaker is installed as well.  It is supposed to be a 40 amp, but mine came from Nitro with a 20 amp :-\  Anytime the motor ran on high for any length of time it would trip and have to be reset.  I finally figured out the problem and it's been fine every since.

So how did the boat run with the 150 on it? I am thinking of putting a 150 EFI on mine and was wondering how it felt?
