Here is a thread that's very similar in the tackle box that is only a couple weeks old.  Looks like most folks say its cheaper to buy jigs or at least unpainted unfinished jigs.  http://www.ultimatebass.com/bass-fishing-forum/index.php?topic=54275.0

This thread will probably end up being moved there.

Izzy I fish jigs a bunch and do make my own also....I don't pour my jig heads but do like the arky style jigs from Janns Netcraft...I buy the unpainted ones and powder coat them ..I use 1/4 oz jigs mostly and their jig has a 4/0 hook....would pour my own but have yet to find a 1/4 mold with larger than 3/0 hook....

I picked up a skirt kit from BPS that has plenty of skirt material, collars, and tool to get your started.....if you like rattles I also get their rattle straps and rattles..

Have fun... :)

thanks scottie, I will have to stop by BPS

Jared

Scottie,

Do these kits come with the regular skirt materials or is it like the bucktail jig material?

Hey Catch....this is the regular silicone skirt material...it's in a plastic bag on the end of the spinnerbait row.....it has a variety of colors and also there are seperal replacement rolls of different colors located in same display...

Stamana products also offers a Natures Edge skirt kit....one for spinners and one for jigs...good kit includes Natures Edge skirts material, collars, rattles, and a skirt tool but I didn't like the tool very much....good colors in the kit though..

I buy preformed heads and build my own skirts. www.fishingskirts.com has any color you will ever need.

If you find the right mold you can always use a Dremel to open the hook lines up to take bigger hooks.  If you do only take a little at a time and keep fitting the hook until it fits.

We tried this with the intention of using heavier hooks on some lighter jigs and it worked quite well.  You may want to try a practice cut on an area of the jig mold that won't affect the mold until you have an idea of how much to take out.

I didn't check the other threads to see if it was there....but you can also get a catalog from  barlowstackle.com. they got a bunch of stuff for making baits.
