June 15, 2005 - Grand Kankakee Marsh

Worked the super heavy slop for about an hour, had one bass come out from under a tree 3 feet away from the MossBoss I was casting and try to hit it from the top...somebody get that fish some contacts  lo it flat out missed the bait by 6 inches.

So I decided to take a hike down to the goose pond and try out the new bait I got in the mail today - Bettencourt Baits Real Fish Line, Bluegill...it's an awesome bait, about the size of a hand-sized bluegill, it's jointed and top and bottom fins are feather, so that when you pull it through the water it looks alive...one guy came walking by and exclaimed that I had caught a nice gill and almost fell over when he realized it was an artificial bait, not a fish...this will probably hook some monster bass for me this year when the conditions are right...nice hot and sunny day when the gills are active this will definitely be a winner. Thanks Nathan you did it again!

OK back to the business at hand, time was evaporating so I walked down to a feeder creek and put on a Tiki Flash texas-rigged weightless with a 3/0 Gamagatsu deep bend hook...first cast I land a 10" rock bass that wouldn't let go of the worm...it wasn't even hooked, it just wouldn't let go  lo couple minutes later, I hook into a 2 pounder that hit in some thick duckweed 3" from shore! Why landing this fish it managed to thrash and impale the barb into my hand while the fish was still hooked...went right past the barb  :surrender: thrashed again an freed itself from my hand ripping the barb right through the skin  :o :shocking: :o oh well, we got him anyway! About 10 minutes later a bizarre finish to my afternoon...a giant bullfrog and a nice sized bass both go for my worm at exactly the same time from opposite directions...the frog got there first  :'( hilarious, but it did put up a good fight - for a frog...

Nature notes: saw a nice herd of deer out in the corn fields on the way to the Marsh, saw several orioles and red headed woodpeckers, and a racoon crossing the road with a small frog

All in all, it was another grand day at the Marsh ~c~
