Matt, go to any taxidermy supply company, i use Wasco, and get the lifetones laquer paint.  they have everything you need for paint.  Think, if you are painting something to resemble an animal, why would you use automotive paint?

The water based paint takes for ever to dry.  Use Laquer, it dries almost instanty.  the Wasco paint comes ready to shoot.  no thinning needed.  Use your basic laquer thinner to clean your gun and make sure you paint in a well ventilated shop.  if you have any more questions, let me know.

Are you using a airbrush or brush? You can use the small bottles of acrylics that walmart sells. They're very cheap and come in many colors. If your using a airbrush make sure to thin them enough to get them to pass through the airbrush (about 50/50 should do it). Use a hair dryer to dry only takes a sec and dry between each color! Hobby lobby sell's createx which is specifically designed for airbrushes. Wasco has some killer paint but until you get real serious about painting I would stick with the cheaper paints and keep practicing...

Matt, i still use a Pache double action air brush, you can get one pretty cheap with needles at Wasco.  the link is www.taxidermy.com  definately invest in one, its the best way to paint fine details. if someone has some pics of the baits I painted for them, please post them up.  I painted up some for Karl at Karu for some Vibrashocks.  I"ll PM Karl and have him post up.

You can use windex which dries quickly, or just water and hit it with the blowdryer to dry. Just keep thinning until it come out of your airbrush steady!

I would suggest spending a little extra cash and getting quality airbrush paint from the start.   Craft paints are a pain to thin and getting them to shoot consistantly thru the brush can be very frustrating.   Wildlife colors, c-tex, polytranspar, golden, and com-art are the best water based paints to shoot.   This will make learning to use your brush easier.   As the Cracker said get a hair dryer and hit the paint for few seconds and on to the next coat/color.

As for an airbrush get a gravity feed brush.   You can shoot 1 drop of paint and clean up is very easy.

Big M is right, get the airbrush, the paint thing with the brush just doesn't cut it.  the paint goes on way too thick and there is no realistic features to the bait.  As for waterbased, i wouldn't mess with it.  i use laquer, it dries instantly and cleans out of the airbrush alot easier than waterbased. the needle will get gunked up really quick with waterbased opposed to laquer.  i run thru alot of laquer with my gun, about a gallon a week.  i run straight laquer thru the gun after every color change.  i only have to clean my gun about once every 3 weeks and i can paint alot of baits without the hassel of tearing everything apart.

Jav, Are you using a respirator or exhaust with that laquer? I sometimes spray laquer based clearcoat and man that's some killer smellin' stuff. I'm just nervous spraying laquer since it's so harmful. Wearing the respirator is a pain in the butt! Just asking, I've been debating trying some new colors I can only find in laquers...

i use an exhaust fan.  to tell ya the truth, i don't spray that much.  i dont even use a cup with my airbrush.  but the exhaust took care of it.  actually folks, when putting in the exhause fan, make sure no one can kick it in and try to steal all your stuff.  that would have happened to me but my neighbor woke up and scared the big dude off. he ruined the fan, but didn't get my stuff.
