When I spool braid on my spinning or casting reels, instead of using a backing, I put a small strip of sticky backed velcro.  You only need an eight of an inch strip across the reel, and it creates plenty of backing so that your braid doesn't slip.  Use the loop side, it tends to work a little bit better. and it will probably stay there for the life of your reel.  no mono to braid knot to fail.  Velcro is available fairly inexpensively at any Dept store, hobby shop, hardware store or I'll bet when  you bought that last tackle bag there were some included.  Try it, I think you will like it.

In the end, it's not going to matter how many breaths you took, but how many moments took your breath away.

A small strip of electricians tape will also work and most people have that lying around  ;)
