Nitro z-9 300 mercxs wont get out of hole

 I just purchased a new nitro z-9 with merc 300xs with an 10 inch jackplate and i am having trouble with the boat getting out of the hole. I am using a 24 and 25 pich fury prop any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

That boat should get out of the hole and then fill it..........quickly.  Is the motor running ok?

If it's running right and you can trim it in all the way and you have the vent holes in the prop large enough, sure don't know why it don't jump right out. What's your RPM when it trys to get on plane, before it breaks over, should be around 4000 RPM.

IMO something is not set up right.

I have a 2003 with a 225 opt and turn a 26 tempest, I've ran a 27 and the hole shot was slow but not that bad for the top end I was getting but could only turn 5050 RPM's and that IMO is to much of a lug on a motor.

Running a 300 on the back of a Z-9 I would think a 27 tempest or Furry would do you better but having issues out of the hole doesn't mean you can turn the props you have now in fact you could be blowing them out I think we need to know how the motor is acting.  Are you red lining the motor or is it sluggish?

I agree with Fogy, sounds like your blowing the prop out. You should be able to turn a higher pitch with that set up.

Yea, not the right prop for the boat, but should still jump out of the hole w/either. You need to make sure all the vent holes are open on the Fury, and make sure you are trimmed all the way down when you take off. Also check your prop shaft to pad height. With that motor, you should be looking into 27 Fury and Bravo 1 props.

Sorry, my buddy posted the original thread.  Should have detailed that I'm running this boat at 3400' elevation and it only has about 5 hours on the engine.  The computer is still over oiling and it only produces 5900 max rpm, 3500 at breakover.  I tweaked the jack plate a little today and found the optimum.  Still slow out but reasonable.  I'm concerned that it should be at full rpm (6400) at this point with the 24 pitch.  Is my expectations to high or should I be concerned?    v~

Sounds like it might be to low in the water to let you get your RPM's up.

I'm not sure about the Z9 but I'm running just a tad under 3.5 below pad like 3.25 or so.

You also might look into a wedge between plate and motor I think it adds another 3* negative tilt.

Not sure if it is the elevation or if you have the high altitude gear set from Merc., but 5900 w/ a 24 Fury isn't right. The double oiling isn't helping either. The Fury has excellent hole shot and should be shooting that boat on plane like a rocket. For comparison, my 25 Fury turns 6k with my 225 XS on a 21' Legend.

1st thing: What gear ratio and what Lower-unit is on your 300xs? It should have a Torquemaster unit and a 1.75:1 gear ratio for your application (heavy boat at high elevation). If it is rigged with a 1.62 Sportmaster then that may be your problem.
