for those who back lash a roll of paper towels here is a trick/tip for you. go to any store that sells crochet hook/tools. the best one for size is a B/1-2.25mm. it has a little hook on the end that you can pull the line out with. wal-mart sells them also. they even make a foam cover to put on it which will float if you drop it in the water. doug

Awesome. Thanks man. I was  ~xyz this morning because I had 1 that was so bad I had to restring. That wind was killing me.

If your tackle bag has the little loops like a cartridge belt you can use plastic and aluminum cigar tubes to store your sharp pointy objects in, or oil bottles to keep them from getting smashed, and it protects them from the elements and makes them  easier to keep track of.  :-*

I have a set of clippers that has a hook on it. Sorry I don't know the brand. The hook makes getting a backlash out a lot eaiser . Great tip need a back up hook.

Ive never used a tool to pick out a backlash, and I get 99% of them out when the occur.

Tip: never pull hard, line will break. The line is not knotted up so by pulling on it you end up knotting it up and weakening it. As your pulling out a backlash and if it stops pulling, look for the line (usually forms a loop) that goes over your main line, just grab it and pull and it usually frees itself from the main and continue pulling. Hard to explain.

I always use my hemostat, although I often wonder if the teeth cause too much damage to the line. I only use it to get the line started coming loose. Once I grip and give a little tug, I use the smooth side to slide up the line to get something I can put my finger on.

those tools that the dentist uses are good for getting backlashes out also you can find them at some tool stores or at some of the outdoor shows

marcoman

Yes! I have one in my tool bag! I am not a dentist but it is called a spring hook puller?

Another good tip for getting tough backlashs out is to press down on your spool of line with your thumb. While pressing on the backlash with your thumb, turn the reel a couple of revolutions. This works very well in most cases.

Yes it does, you can gently pull off the lose line until you feel it stick then use your thumb to hold down the binding line and give it a few turns and then pull the lose line off again.  Once I learned to do this I might have to cut line or pick it out once or twice a year everything else is workable.

I use a sewing machine needle from my wife's machine.. I find it works most of the
time. You can get these in different sizes...

I stick the needle in my carpet in front of my foot control pedal. I have never lost it
and have never lost one yet.. And these needles don't rust..

I'll be looking for a spring hook puller..

You can get those spring hook pullers in electronic stores too... Electronic techs use them allot for connecting springs... imagine that ! lol
Thanks for listening, good fishin'

Another tip: I saw this one on Bill Dance. After backlash, before you do anything else, tighten your drag all the way down, Put your thumb tightly on the spool, crank your reel handle two or three times, remember to hold tight with your thumb, (this forces your line forward and almost always frees the knot), then just pull the line out.

I used to have a lot of time invested with getting out backlashes. Sincr I saw this this tip on Bill's show my time digging is almost down to 15 seconds.

Good luck and remember the harder you pull the harder the knot will become.

That's the same tip someone posted a while back too. It only makes mine worse. Maybe my backlash loops are doing something yours aren't.

Another trick is to place your thumb firmly on the spool and crank it appx 1/2 inch. Pull the line and see if it comes loose. In the event that it doesn't , then do it again. You may have to do this several times but 95% of the time it will work.
The line will straighten out and it should free the tangles.

theskinnyde

I uses this, be careful not to nick your line though!

That is the way I've always done it.  First backlash (and first cast, btw) I had nothing to "pick" it out with, and wouldn't know how to use it if i had!
Just took it slooooow and easy, figured out how that sucker was stuck, and unstuck that sucker!
