I am looking at a Nitro 640 with a 50 on it.  Can anyone give me the pros and cons on this boat?  It's an '01, for some reason  I think the 50 is a small motor for the boat. With that said what might the top speed be? And how will it get outta the hole?

Another question is what should this boat go for? I just want a small bass boat to start off with, something I might can use in shallow water. Is this a good boat or am I looking at the wrong thing? Money is a factor so any suggestions are apprecitated. I am hoping to buy a decent boat for around 5k?????  Thanks

   AND HI, I'm new    :)

I started with an old Cajun with a 50 Yamaha and I got about 25 miles per hour out of it. It was fine until I started fishing tourney's with it, then it was really too small to get from the launch to my spots in a decent time. I moved up to a newer boat and a 115 within a year. I just bought a 2004 Nitro 700 with a 115 for $8000, so if you keep looking I'm sure you can find someting bigger for $5000.

Hi Wannafish,
Glad you came around to UB. I think it is small for that boat but most likely factory without upgrade packages.
For 5K I think you can do alittle better. I do like Nitro's though, for the money they are good boats. I have run a Nitro 700LX w/120hp on the back since 1999 and she still purrs like a kitten.
Keep in mind too the Length of the boat if you plan to fish tournaments. Most have a 17 ft min on the boat Lenght.
Still will catch fish in this boat! Speed is fun and "cool" BUT that isn't what catches nice fish. but helps beat him to the honey hole  lo

Hi wannafish glad to see you stopped in

My very 1st bass boat was a 1999 Nitro 640 with a 75hp and will tell you the 75 wasn't enough, 90 was the max rating.

To show you in another way think about getting a 17 or 18 foot boat rated for 175hp and then only putting a 90 on it.  You won't be happy for long.

I know any boat is better then no boat but if you can just hold out and keep looking you will find one that fits you better.  I'm not sure what they were asking for the 640 and if all you want is to get on the water and not worry about speed it is a great first boat and was very good to me.

Wish you all the best.

  Thanks Stump,

From what I can see, that was a deal for sure !!!!

I have my eye on a 750 with a 115 on it what can you tel me about the boat? Seems like an 02 and 04 would be about the same? They are both all fiberglass right? Just seems to me like the NITRO  is the best "starter" boat? I see that Stratos has one but it looks like I can find a better powered nitro for a bit cheaper, and unfotunatly for me money does apply. I would ask AB but I can tell that he favors stratos all around? DUH

Not too many people seem to know about the different boats, does the nitro ride on a pad with the 700?  I recall seein the old rangers that look like they are plowing water? I don't need a fast boat but I do like one that rides nice........   Thanks

A friend of mine hs the 750 with a 125 on it and it runs well.

All the Nitros will run on pad if powered and propped right.  ;)

Thanks, Fogy for all your help.

I was wondering what the compression ration might be on the Tracker(mercury) 115? Or is there a way to find out what the tolerance might be?

I ran a 17 ft Nitro with a 115 for about 6 years.  Got about 47 - 50 with it most days out.  Great boat for the rivers in North FL.  A little small for the big water which is why I upgraded to a 20 ft Nitro 911CDC with Merc 225 Opti.  Only get about 60 right now but it handles like a dream in rough water.
