I think I have caught the peacock bug.
How can you not like a fish that looks similar to the large mouth only prettier and puts up one hell of a fight?
By doing some on-line research, I learned why this fish was brought to the Dade & Broward County Waterways Canal Systems, where they originated, and why you wont find them in large lakes like in the everglades etc. due to water temps in the colder months. I have also come to the conclusion that the Peacock Craze is just heating up. I noticed alot of people offering peacock guided trips both here in Miami and the Brazilian, Argentinian amazon rivers where they grow to rediculous 20lb+ sizes slamming topwater lures to pieces.
If you would like to be introduced to this gorgeous fish, just go to youtube.com and type in peacock bass. You'll see what I mean!
Anyhow, I just wanted to share my excitment towards this amazing game fish. It's really not related to the LM Bass, it's actually in the Cyclide family but does have a resemblence and is always referred to as the Peacock Bass.

Just heating up??

Try its been hot for years... so much so that Miami is asking for help identifying the fishes movements and new locations... I believe they even gave or are considering giving the peacock bass the coveted "sport fish" title...

Here ya go...

TONS of information... Let me know what you think...

Mike,

Thanks a bunch!

Yeah, I guess I have just started to really here more buzz about them recently locally.
I caught a couple small Pees yesterday.
When I ask anyone who is in a boat thats in the canal system, they are telling me that the Pees are kinda small right now and no one knows where they are heavily schooling due to heavy spraying (I think for pesticides or to kill the heavy amounts of surface algae). The water has also cooled tremendously. There obviously still there to be caught but most seem a bit small right now.

Damn they love chasing a fast jerking Heddon Torpedo!

How far North are Peacok Bass caught in Florida?  I go to the Kissimmee/St. Cloud area every year to go Bass fishing.  Thought this might be fun to try.

Baron you would still have to head a little farther southeast down to Pompano beach area canals by the listing by the FWCC...

Look here: http://myfwc.com/Fishing/docum/butterfly.html#Locations

They are moving further and further north every year... the only thing stoppng them from going futher than they have is keeping breeding populations in colder areas of Florida in the winter... below 55 degrees and they die...

Yeah, so far the Boca Raton area is as far North as I think they are but there is good possibilities that they are in the Delray BEach area as well. The canal systems keep heading north to West Palm Beach. I am catching them in Pompano Beach and in the Boca area. Though I have to say, the size of these Pees have gotten a bit smaller in the past month for some odd reason.

I've fished for peacocks in the Miami area.  We had a ball, even though we were experiencing cold-front conditions.

As a matter of fact, I even filmed the entire event and made a television show about it.  If you watch The Sportsman Channel, you'll probably be able to see it later this spring.
