I was 10.  I was a young inspiring engineer, so I naturally took the dang thing apart.  not sure if the crappy casting was a result of that..  but even as a kid I hated it.  that tiny post that pics up the line to spool it was not robust at all.

people still use them?

Started with a 202 and then a 33... A few years ago I bought my daughter a new version of the 33 which is a very well-built piece. I used it two years ago some in my "How To Fish" YouTube series.

Woo Daves used spin cast equipment throughout his career. Didn't slow him down, not one bit.

I still have my 33. I use it whenever Speck Season (cold front in S FL comes around LOL). Can't kill those reels.

Fun Fact: ZEBCO actually stands for "ZEro hour Bomb CO" as the founder used to repair bombers equipment during the World War eras.

I never had a zebco that I can recall.  My last spin cast was a Johnson Century.  I bought it at Kell's Hardware in Lexington, Ohio in 1956  using money I saved by returning old soft drink bottles to the store for the 2 cent deposit.  I was so proud of this rig with a two piece fiberglass rod.  Countless numbers of fish were caught on this rig from Ohio farm ponds to wilderness lakes in Canada.  It still occupies a place of honor on the rod rack in my office.

We went camping last weekend, my wife brought along her custom built pink rod with the Zebco Omega Pro spincast reel. I got to cast it quite a few times. ;D

I have 3 or 4 Zebco 33s and 202s mounted on older rods for children and inexperienced fishing guests. At least 2 of them are probably 30 years old and still work fine.

Truthfully those Johnsons laid the "Zero Hour" reels in the shade.

I used Zebco 20/20's years ago for light top water baits.  I caught many bass on them in glades with rapala baits.  That was 40 years ago and I still have a few around and the grandkids use them.

I got one of those Johnson Century reels when I was about 12.  I was so excited, and it was by far the smoothest reel I had at the time.  I started with 202's and 33 was the mainstay when I started bass fishing.  If I put one of those in my hands now, I'd be like what the heck.  How in the world did I fish with this reel.  Do love the memories.
