Chair, Butt/Casting Seat, or No Seat?

What's y'all's preference? I have full seats (non-adjustable) on the front and rear deck in my boat. The front one is nice if I want to sit and troll while I graph stuff at the bow and mark waypoints, but it's really in the way when I fish. I'm thinking of maybe splitting the difference and going with a butt seat on one of those pneumatic pedestals that raise and lower. It wouldn't be as big, and I think it would be less in the way than a full seat. My son also says his chair is in his way when he is fishing on the back deck, and that one has also scuffed my motor cowl all up when I accidentally trimmed the motor into it once. He says he thinks he'd rather have no seat at all. I might do an adjustable butt seat on the front and nothing on the back.

Was kind of looking at something like the Millenium Marine Palma Horse seat. What are y'all's thoughts?

Unless you really like sitting down while fishing a full front seat just gets in the way. A butt seat is way smaller and you can lean on it if needed and it sometimes keeps you from falling out of the boat if you hit a stump/catch a bad wave.

For the back if he doesn't want one just take it out. As a coangler many times it really gets in the way.

My present setup on my Stratos is I have Butt seats on the front and rear decks. We use them mostly to lean on while fishing. I do have a full padded fold down seat that gets mounted on the rear deck when my wife fishes with me.

I also have a G3 1548 Alweded Jon boat. I have butt seats mounted on the front and rear deck also. I use this setup when fishing the electric motor lakes. When I attach the 25hp outboard to it I have to remove the back butt seat. I have a fold down full padded swivel seat I mount so I can operate the outboard.

I use an adjustable butt seat in front, my 73 year old balance likes having it to lean on. I adjust my back seating accoding to partner preference. My wife and some others like the full seat. I have a second butt seat that some prefer, and others want no seat. Easy to make adjustments before heading out.

Deck seats have been an evolving process over the past decade (s). Originally I did not have any seat on the front deck but always had a full seat on the back deck for the Mrs. Then I went to having an adjustable butt seat on the front and now I have had to change for a full seat on the front due to my less than solid balance from time to time. My old 365V has a small deck and I agree the seat gets in the way but thats just how it will have to be. The full seat also helps some of my back muscles at the same time so I guess it is the right decision for me.

it's not always about what a guy WANTS to do... some of us have back issues and have made the choice: sit down and fish all day, plus be able to MOVE the next day... or stand up for 15 minutes until the back spasms send you home.

seats of all types have a role, a purpose. but that' a very personal choice.

for what it's worth, if a guy works at it, you can flip, pitch, skip from a seated position ... just have to 'want to'... and that is still using 7.5 foot rods.

I have a butt seat on the front and a full chair on the back. I fish off the back of my boat often and need the full chair for my back. I cannot fish more than a few hours straight without sitting down for a bit.

I'd like to have no seat but after about 15 minutes of basically standing still my back hurts. I've got a butt seat on the bow of the skeeter which helps but I have zero padding on my backside so a full seat is my preference.

I don't have any serious back problems, but I'm right there with you on the "zero padding" thing

For what it's worth, I can fish sitting down, I just feel like I have more casting control if standing. I think I might get at least one butt seat and try it out. My balance is good, but my boat is not a fiberglass bass boat. It's an aluminum center console, so rough water moves it a lot more than it would a glass boat. Something to lean on for stability might be a good idea.

I agree seat / no seat that is a personal issue, I use a full seat all the time but then I'm old and standing gets to my legs and back over time. I have learned over the last few year that I can do everything I use to do standing I now do seating.

About 15 years ago when I was in my early 50's I had no seats in the boat then I started putting the butt seat on the back deck and by noon it was on the front. Now at 68 and with knee and back issues and the lose of stability that goes with it, the butt seat is a must. I do feel like I can't cast as well while seating/leaning versus standing but there is no way I could fish without it now.

I wonder if some seats can have the back removed by taking out bolts/screws. That seems like it would be comfortable to have the full size ass seat but no back for those that can balance.

I actually have a front deck seat that is a full seat size without the back. Have had it for years although I haven't used it for a few years. I liked it but like a full seat with a back it is space limiting. Might as well use a standard chair style seat and get the benefits of having back support. I have tried them all but at my age the full seat is my choice.

At 64 I am trilled to continue without anything in the front. I have both a pedestal and chair available for the back of the boat for anyone that wants one. I hope I can continue for a bunch more years because I believe you can fish better that way, but I will fish as long as I can anyway I have to.

I prefer to fish standing up and use a butt seat up front for support. After several hours my back needs a break so I'll move to the full seat on the back deck and control my ultrex with the remote.

I'm a little late to this party, not sure why. I have LeanPro seats with adjustable seat posts for both front and rear as well as a comfy Stratos seat for the rear, also on an adjustable post. If the action is good or I'm fishing a tourny, I'm standing. If things are slow, I'm leaning or sitting occasionally. I appreciate the lean seat at times for wakes and rough water.

I use a pedestal seat so I can either stand up or lean/sit with little effort. I've done it this way for the last 25 years and at 64 it's still the way that best suits me.

my friend doenst even know where his pedestal things are. he cant remember if they are full seats or the stumps. he has never ever used them.

i fish with him often and i am not to embarrassed to drop into a downward-dog yoga position to stretch my back. it feels so good sometimes.

Your age and physical condition will determine what track you follow. I have gone through the entire scheme. I went first 20 years of boat ownership with nothing, Just standing. Then went to a standard seat, but felt like a sissy. Then a butt seat with adjustable post. Then back to a seat with the adjustable post. Now a hammock with cup holders. Final stop will be a coffins! Time flies bye so quickly.
