Cooper or Toyo - spit on both?

Baby needs new shoes... 285/75R70 so they gonna be pricey to start with.

Looking at a set of Cooper tires that look good and will save me $100 ($25 a tire) but I can get them at a store that will put a no questions asked warranty for the life of the tire.

Or I can go with the Toyo's at the dealership as they are the recommended tire for the truck. It came with Toyo's and I've enjoyed them, good ride, stopping power, great grip on the ramps, and I've exceeded the milage life by 15k but it's time. So I have it in my head why change?

Plus didn't Cooper have issues a couple years ago?

Cooper all the way. It's an American made tire and I love mine. I have the STT Pros and Discoverer AT3 XLTs. The STT Pro is an awesome off-rode tire as well as a deep snow tire. They are really aggressive and they do tend to be a bit noisy though. Still quieter than a lot of the aggressive tires. I bought a second set of wheels and a set of the Discoverer AT3 XLTs for the nine months of the year that I'm towing. I actually liked them so much I kept them on the truck last Winter. The do great in the snow, they're quiet, I get good fuel mileage, great on wet roads, and handle great for a 10 ply tire.

I run nothing but Toyo Open Country R/T in my fleet. I'm running 7 sets right now. Hands down best value in performance and miles per set.

couple years back I put the Cooper Discverer AT3s on my 2006 tundra. GREAT grip in all pavement conditions (I don't intentionally go off-road at this point). that was in Nebraska. handled ice, snow, rain excellent. with that truck AND the v8, it took some effort to 'spin' the tires.

on my 4th set of AT3s as we speak. first set on the 2018 tundra. haven't tried TOYOs... then again , at this point, have no need.
they are great on our ramps here too...

The AT3's aren't an aggressive tread although they are "all terrain". You'll appreciate that if you're ever visiting Guntersville during a freak Spring snow storm, ask Fogy about this

or you back up into a soppy field. The tread siping goes nearly the entire depth of the tread which contributes to the great wet traction. The quietness is attributable to little sound blocks designed into the tread. The XLT has a slightly beefed up sidewall with a little tread wrap around. That's more important if you tend to ride in ruts or drive up on curbs. You can get a Discoverer AT3 LT, same tire without the beefed up sidewall and a little cheaper.

I've run BFG AT KO2s for many years. These Cooper Discoverer AT3 XLTs have got those tires beat all to pieces. Better treadwear, better traction, better ride, and quieter. My stepson has Toyos on his Ram, I don't know which model, but you can hear the tires coming up the road long before you can see the truck.

i am rolling around on Coopers right now. been fine.

i only bought them because the Michelin LTX M/S i had went on backorder for a couple of years. (best tire ever!)

Deciding factor for me was in part that Coopers are made in USA. I've heard the Michelin bought Cooper, so I'm not sure about this today. I own both a set of STT Pros and a set of AT3 XLTs and I will say they are probably the very best light truck tires I've ever owned. Last year I ran the AT3s straight through Winter. They did a super job in the snow. I'm hoping for a warm day so I can swap back to the STT Pros for this Winter just so I can conserve the wear on the AT3s. So far after two and a half years, neither tires show much wear at all.

Toyo makes a good tire, but they are usually very heavy. Not usually a big deal, but when gas/diesel prices are through the roof...
I ran Coopers for a while, but that was ages ago. Their line-up has changed since then. They were good tires though.
I've been running Goodyear Duratracs for a long time now (like last 9 yrs), really pleased with their wet weather traction and ability to clear mud, which most ATs kind of suck at. They are also fairly light. They do get noisy toward the end of their life though.

Not that many and a majority of this year's are towing mile. The total for the past 2 1/2 years is 1bout 16000.

My STT Pros (tire alone) weigh 69lbs each. Not sure how much each tire on the rim weighs, but my guess is close to 100lbs. Rotating or swapping tires is a real workout.

Something worth mentioning for folks thinking about upgrading to larger beefier tires. You should also upgrade your brakes.

Mike, if you're happy with the tires you have I'd go with them, you don't go bouncing over hill and dale, you don't have that much of an issue with snow, it sounds to me like at this point price speaks the loudest.

Jim, on the brakes -- have the 3.0L duramax which is just awesome for both towing and mileage. Thinking I should upgrade my front brakes at least. Brakes are getting due as well so while I am doing it wanted some opinions.

pulling the 21 PHX (mostly across the street) but i do go to other ramps and can definitely feel when the boat is attachd versus not from a braking standpoint.

what did you upgrade to?

I've used PowerStop for my last two trucks. There's several upgrade kits available for most trucks. I usually do rotors and pads, but they have higher performance calipers as well. The compete Z36 kit for my truck was about $800 and you can do the install yourself in a couple hours. Makes a huge difference in stopping distance. https://www.powerstop.com/

Jim, thanks for the brake info. I have just bookmarked the website. My Ranger weighs 3250 lbs and even with the trailer brakes I have to be careful when stopping. Your suggestion might just be the ticket I am looking for as well as the material used to make the product should be a good long life product.

i know this thread is old. i just wanted to update the crew here on my Coopers.

i drove a lot!! they wear kinda fast. one tire in particular seems to be wearing faster. it was in back, so it wasnt so much an alignment issue. dunno. and they got louder as they wore down. loud to where i had a mechanic look for a bad bearing. no..it was the tire. i'm still on them. MPG is okay. par.

a drunk driver just ran into me, so the truck may go byebye. i have a deposit on a new one already. i cant justify paying all money to fix it. out of pocket..drunk was without insurance. and my own CA uninsured motorist coverage is abysmal. whatever. i wasnt hurt and i am thrilled.

i am getting new tires. hahah..Goodyears, and they come with a new truck!!

Man that sux... amazing how it's the law to have insurance but over 25% of the drivers out there don't have it. If there is an accident it's a 1 in 4 chance they won't have insurance...

That's the one good thing about Florida's no fault insurance. Your insurance pays for your vehicle and then they have to duke it out with the other insurance company, if there is one...

Wow! Glad you weren't injured. Really surprised about the tires. Did they come from a tire shop or WalMart? I only run my STT Pros in the Winter and the Discoverer AT3 XT's the rest of the year. So far they show very little signs of wear although the STT Pros don't get near the mileage on them as the Discoverers.
