Same stuff the Shimano SLX to Curado is made out of, all manufactures call it by a different name.

So,... Aluminum??

Frnknsteen I miss spoke, I do not know what the final version is made of but I should be able to find out pretty quick.

Any luck finding out? Im interested in these reels. It seems they are built well and would be durable. Im a Shimano and Daiwa reel guy. The people who
Have these what reel company would you say these reels compare closer to?

Thanks to a fellow UB member (thanks Doug!)  I was able to get my hands on one to try out recently. I'm gonna do a quick write up shortly. I've thrown it around on the front lawn of our building but haven't gotten it on the water yet

Just from those couple times I can say that to me they feel closer to my Daiwas. I don't have Shimano anymore, but I do have Lew's and ABU reels that cost significantly more than the Maverick and the Maverick is better IMHO.

I'm not gonna say these will replace my Daiwas, but since I am not longer in the position to afford $200+ reels the Mavericks will get my first consideration moving forward.

Interesting. I look forward to your review. Does the weight of the reel bother you any? I watched Hellabass stream recently with Gary and he alluded that the reels were not Aluminum. Im just curious to see what material. Did it feel sturdy and do you see any potential issues with flexing of the frame? I currently have all lews and shImano. The lews just feel maybe a little to light and fragile like a toy to me lol.

The weight on my digital postal scale was 7.4 oz the same as my Tatula SV TW 103 reels so it feels very familiar and comfortable for me.

I can't really speak to the sturdiness under load or flex etc. since I haven't had it on the water yet.

In hand it feels much more solid than my Lew's reels but I can't really make a determination based solely on that.

The frame is not aluminum.  Let's get that out of the way.  I'm not a chemical engineer and can't even guess what polygraphite resin was used as the frame platform.

What I can tell is the material is ultra rigid.  I find no evidence of flex under load.  The drive side plate is attached by five screws. This, it would appear, shares any stress equally as it is attached to the frame.  Again, no flex or distortion under load.

The spool shaft is supported by three bearings. The spool is pretty light so it's start up is very quick. I noted the spool control features 8 magnets in a common configuration. Obviously the system is not centrifugal nor an inductor being Daiwa owns the mag force patent.

I found nicely machined brass gears and a beefy drag set. That's as deep as I go.

Gary put this design through the ringers before giving it the thumbs up. For those who don't know, Gary has been a die hard Daiwa guy for a long long time.  I knew this product would be influenced by his experience with Daiwa reels so I had an idea and expectation what the Mavs might feel like and perform like.  I've already read some crap about these reels just being for the Dobyns fan boys and not a legitimate entry level reel. What ever. Looking carefully and with use, however limited, I'm willing to bet the Mavs have a great track record.  By the way, reduce the bearing count in the handle knobs and your at seven ounces and run a puny handle and your sub seven ounces. I can only speak for me. This is a great product at a very competitive price point.

Interesting. I know Gary mentioned he would tournament fish with them. Im curious how these would compare to
Other 99 dollar reels, such as lews lfs, Daiwa Fuego, Slx, BPS pro qualifier. It be nice to find a durable reel at the 99 price point that lasts.

I got to hold a Maverick in hand today. Didn't get to fish it, but it palmed well.

Thanks for the quick follow up RB-NC I have only fished the prototypes, they were amazing. He made several tweaks to them since the ones I've fished so I didn't want to comment to much, but the spool system is the same and I knew it would not disappoint folks.  ~c~ ~c~

Im thinking about order a few to try out. Frame material kind if worried me, but with todays materials it may be
Fine. I sometimes find it concerning when no one lists the frame material. No mention at all actually in the discription.

I totally get it. There was a time when I was not a proponent of a reel not having an alloy frame. Then came Zaion in the Daiwa LT series of spinning reels and they are time and use tested. I have several and a not metal alloy is proven.  The developers of new materials have applied those materials to fishing reels just as nano resins are applied to rod blank construction.

There's a number of main stream reel companies currently touting "graphite" frames with price points well over the Mavs. Alternative materials are here to stay. Evaluate the package as a whole and this product will prove itself. It won't need my help.

I bought an 8 ratio and a 6 ratio casting reel. I have Curado's and Tourny pro's. Im curious to see if these can be workhorses. I like the price point.
