Flipping rods?

I have used broomsticks to very active tip rods.
What is everyone's favorite action?

I have come to the conclusion that I need extra tip action so the fish don't detect me as fast. The Extra heavy extra fast action rods are a detriment to me, as I am too slow, in my older age, to set the hook before they feel me. A heavy action casting ro works far better for my hook ups and reaction time.

I have a couple different flipping rods, they are both MH fast.  I don't like the heavy and extra heavy, I don't fish a ton of super heavy vegetation, but feel like the little bit softer tip keeps the hook pinned better.  Maybe it is just a me thing but that works best for me!

I just got my new rod, 7' MH/Fast, that I'm itching to try out some punching and flipping with.

Yeah I like a little give in the rod tip as well. IMO it's critical when using braid ( at least for me it is).

On a side note 7 1/2 feet is about the max length I feel comfortable with for this technique. I've tried longer rods but I start to feel like I'm fighting the rod more than not.

Except for cranks i don't use anything over 7 foot, I've gone from 5'81/2" to 5'7" and with a high gunnel it makes it tough to flip/pitch, I'm learning the roll cast. lo I don't really have any cover that a med/hev fast won't work for and I get by with lighter line than most of you, a 6 lb fish is a trophy class fish.

And my biggest pet peeve in bass fishing (besides forward looking heat-seeking radar, anyway) is are you actually FLIPPIN', or are you PITCHIN'. There is sometimes a huge difference, and the rods and tackle need to be different also. Pitching is NOT Flippin'.

Very true. Most people say they were flippin' when they were pitchin'.

Tackle does need to be different but I still like just a bit softer tip in the rod either way.

Just doin' me.

I do/did very little flipping here, generally the water is at least fairly clear and I didn't want to get any closer than necessary to what cover we have.

Zip it all de[pends on How and What I'm Flipping-Pitching-Punching. I do NOT feel that one Rod Does All in this case.

For Flipping, where you hold the line in one hand and are using a pre-determined length of line and are using a swing method to place and return the Bait, I like a Rod that has just the right amount of length that FITS ME comfortably. That Length will be Your Personal Fit and only you can figure that out.

With my old smaller boat where I sat to fish, I used a HMH that had a length of 7'3". It was a Skeete Reese Big Worm/Jig Rod and it worked awesome in feeling the bite and setting the Hook. With this style I liked to use a Jig n Trailer in a 1/4 to 3/4 weight. I did switch to a T-Rig with a Flipping Hook when using a bait like a Swamp Hog-Brush Hog-or whatever Brand you use call it.

With my Ranger I rarely use a Flip Method anymore. I now tend to Stand and use a Pitch to place the Bait in a Close to Far location depending on my mood or the opportunity presented to me. Because the distance is longer, or can be, I have learned that a H tends to work better to give me that extra Pull to drag them out and set the hook. My Preference has become a Carbonlite 2 H in a 7'6" length. With this set up I tend to use a 1/2 to 3/4 T-Rigged Flipping Hook. I vary the weight not by the Depth I'm fishing but by the Action of the Bait I'm using. For example with a Rage Structure Bug it takes a little weight to make it flap and move, so I use a 1/2. For a Rage Craw it takes a little more to get the extra plastic moving, so I use a 3/4.

For True Punching where the canopy is thick and you need that heft to drive it through, I use an XH 7'9" Punching/Flipping Rod with a 1 to a 1 1/2 weight.

As to NAMES each gets called, as I wrote above the Flip is different from the Pitch and was the first style to gain National Popularity. Interestingly MOST of the Original Flippers use a Worm or a Fluke-Minnow style Bait, long before the Creature Bait was made known.

Today the Flip and the Pitch Names are used together to morph into the same thing. Only a few still feel the need to correct someone when they call what they are doing a Flip when it really is a Pitch, or visa-versa. However it is and always was two different ways to fish.

In this case I am talking true flipping punching. I am fishing less than 10 feet from the boat in heavy to thick cover. Where moving the bait up and down in the water column gets you bites. This is when the extra tip helps get me that extra second to set the hook. but I also need a stout rod to get them out of the stuff.

I used to use a 7'3"  Extra heavy extra fast flipping rod but lately ( the last ten years ) I have needed the extra second. So now I use a 7'5" heavy fast casting rod My hook ups have improved greatly and I have to say it hasn't hurt my landing percentage either.

i am pitchin' more than 95%  of the time.
a 7-5 or 7-6 MH Xfast rod almost all of the time.
go to the MH Fast rod when 'tryin' to skip.  that's always an adventure.

Eventually, I'm going to chat with FD about a new Spiral wrapped Princeton_Man Special. I too like a little more tip.

Right now, I'm using a Dobyns Kaden 745C Mag/Hvy for flipping heavy cover and a Dobyns Savvy 734C lighter cover. I started doing that after I broke my beloved LSCR built on a Rain Shadow Eternity2 blank. I hate to give up my split grips, but I'm about to order a Champion Extreme 746C to try in fill both rolls that my LSCR filled.

For me, I pitch a lot. A rod with a good parabolic bend with  backbone lower in the rod is what I prefer. With 65 lb braid and a stiff rod, something's got to give and it's usually the fish's mouth. The hook will wallow out a hole. A good parabolic rod will load up and keep fish hooked up.

When my bro in law was down, we got into a good pitching bite..I gave him my 7-6 and switched my 7-2 H frogging rod and I really noticed the difference. The 4 extra inches of my 7-6 flipping stick really made a big difference in getting bass up and out of heavy cover.

As far as bite detection, a pitching or flipping bite is more of a reaction bite and the fish doesn't move far. The bait just drops down in their house and they react. It's more of suddenly feeling weight on the end of the line then setting the hook.

Carbonlite 2 Makes a XH 7'9" that might be just what your looking for.

I really like the Cabonlite 2's that I have. When I first got one I was trying to set the hook on blades of grass hitting the swimming worm, until I learned the difference.

I have H 7'6" and they do very well for me.

I had Lee Smith make me a couple 7ft Custom rods that I use.  One is a Spiral Wrapped Heavy Action Fast Tip I can use for Flipping or Pitching.  The other is a 7ft MH Fast Tip I could use for either Flipping or Pitching also.  Most of the time I Pitch to a target but there are times when I do Flip,
