A neighbor called and aske if I would look at his PT 92. The weapon is a copy of the Berretta FS 92.  His PT 92 has a 17 round magazine, the FS 92 is 15 rounds. I loaded and locked down his mag, racked the weapon but he round didn't enter the chamber. I pulled the magazine, pulled the rounds, checked the mag and inserted it into the PT 92.  I racked the weapon and again the weapon didn't chamber a round. I was thinking of taking his weapon apart but went to my weapons room and brought back my own PT 92.  I loaded my magazine into his weapon, racked a round and it loaded round into his chamber. I'm thinking of possible problems when I looked at the magazines side by side.  Mine was 17 round nd his 15 round. His magazine was too short to feed his weapon.. He THOUGHT the magazines on the two weapons were interchangeable. Just a heads up. Make sure you load the correct magazine. Your life depends on it.

If someone is going to own certain types of firearms, they need to learn everything they can about it BEFORE purchasing or handling it. Just my .02

Id be really concerned about a person that just randomly thinks of shit to try/swap/experiment with their firearm. Try that shit with a garbage disposal, the windshield washer fluid bottle, or the recliner. But never jack with a firearm unless you know for a absolute fact what the hell you are doing. Just my opinion.

Glad you straightend him out there Wiz, you may have saved his life from some stupid stunt late down the road.

That is valuable information. Many parts interchange between the Beretta and the Taurus, good to know the magazines aren't one of them.

I am not a licensed gunsmith, but I do work on guns and none of mine are stock. Here's a secret: no one knows what they hell they're doing until they've learned. I say kudos to the guy for asking for help.

I love getting basket cases, or baggie cases. It's always one of two stories; someone coughs up a ziplock baggie of parts and says either "my friend swore he knew what he was doing", or, my favorite and I don't know why anyone is ever expected to believe this, "my wife wanted to clean my gun." C'mon man, really? Your wife wanted to surprise you by cleaning your gun? Well it costs double if your wife did it. Men are happy to pay double rather than admit they took their gun apart and don't know how to put it back together.

Taurus bought the license AND the South American factory for the Beretta 92. The deal allowed them to make changes and improvements to the weapon.  In some ways the Taurus is improved over the Beretta. I am not an Armorer but as a professional shooter for over 30 years  I have learned much about repairing weapons and do most of my own work. I also own a full set of armorer's tools.

I've got everything I need for what I do. Some specialty tools and equipment, some custom tools I've made myself. One thing I don't have are AR specific tools. That surprises a lot of folks who know me, but I just don't mess with ARs, they ain't my cup of tea. Besides, "smiths" who "specialize" in ARs are a dime a dozen. I've seen LEGO kits that take more talent to build.

The AR is a simple weapon. The AR in Nam was full Rock & Roll and at times it was needed. The AR is still one of the cheapest weapons to shoot.  My work weapons were .308 and .177. My favorite rifle  for hunting and fun is the 1898 Krag .30-40 and the handgun is a Kimber UItra Covert .45.

the Kimber is a sweet weapon.  I didnt know they were into the smaller carry weapons now.  Very nice!

Caddyjoe, they've had the commander sized 1911 with bobtail grip for around ten years now. Since then they've just been making them smaller and smaller.

Wiz, here's something interesting about the M16 series that's not well known. In the mid 2000's the Corps started the "Squad Advanced Marksman" program. Basically every squad was to have its own designated marksman. Not to be confused with the traditional sniper role of surveillance and target acquisition, more like the role of a SWAT team sniper.
To compliment that program the boys at Quantico built or designed the SAM-R, Squad Advanced Marksman-Rifle. It was a heavily modified M16A4 with a full free float heavy profile stainless steel barrel, bipod, flat top receiver with flip up irons and several different high quality scopes available for it. I've sent you a pic of myself and my squad's DM in Afghanistan.
Anyway, that fancy rifle was semi and full auto. The receiver was stamped for three round burst and Wikipedia says it was semi auto only, but the truth is they discovered the M16A1 trigger group was just better suited to precision shooting. And it did make a very noticeable difference, much lighter trigger pull with a much cleaner break. So it was a scoped precision rifle capable of full auto fire, something you rarely ever see. Only example of it that I know of personally. They only built around 100 of them I believe, and they were issued with 20 round straight box mags based off the original mags they issued in 'Nam so the DM could get behind the rifle in the prone position with the bipod set at its lowest height.

Not long after that they switched to a heavily modified M14 I believe built from Fulton Armory receivers. Much better suited for the mid to long range engagements in Afghanistan.

I'm still salty that they've retired my beloved M249 belt fed LMG in favor of a glorified full auto M16 variant. It's based on H&K's M416 and it's a very fine rifle, but when you need a large volume of lead down range very quickly there's just no replacement for belt fed automatics.

My last trip to Quantico was in 07 or 08 for sound, distance and accuracy testing. I was comfortable at 700-750 yards with my .308 and 300 yards with my .177. I've won an NRA national championship in small bore but seldom needed to fire long distance. Another angler on UB was a long range shooter who can reach out 900 yards (avg. distance) and touch someone. I believe I mentioned both the SAM-R and the SAW shortly after I joined UB.
Joe, the Ultra series have 3 in. fore weighted barrels. and weigh 25 oz..

Not a big fan of AR's myself. Cheap wanna be Colts. I have an actual M4 Carbine. Armalite Rifle, a rifle so crappy, not even the US Military wanted it (M16/M4 version) and we both know they go nuts over cheap crap in bulk. So if they passed on it, that right there tells you it was junk. FN now makes the M4s for the military since Colt lost it's contract. My only complaint with them, they jam and misfire a LOT more than the Colts did. That and they're not an American company, they're Belgian. Why is the US using foreign weapons over US made? That would be a lot like Russia, China or Korea buying and using our own weapons against us instead of using their own. (Taliban weaponry excluded because we all know what happened there..)

They're a foreign company with a US factory. That's a requirement for military contracts, even with a foreign company it has to be built on US soil. FN and Beretta have had factories here since the 80's I believe. But I do agree, our weapons should be built by entirely American owned and operated companies.
I'm pretty sure that's one of the things that's held back GLOCK in the past, but I think I've heard they're talking about building a factory somewhere here in the south. I think my FNS9 is made in Georgia, but I'd have to look at it and double check.

I finally got around to checking, my FN is marked Fredericksburg VA.
