Drop Shot Hook sizes?

I totally understand the theory, just never played with it that much and wonder what sizes to try.

if you're working with 'mosquito' hooks, #2 up to 1/0 can work.  heavier lines need bigger hook eyes.
if you're working around cover (like those cypress 'snarls') might opt for a small EWG style hook.  Gammie makes a decent one in 1/0...  that way you can texpose your bait if desired.  bait still 'stands out straight' and tail quivers.  but you get hung a lot less.

#1 or 2 depending on the thickness of the bait. The trick is to lean into the hookset while reeling instead of swinging on them. The little hook point works great. My biggest drop shot fish was 9 lbs. and that little hook didn't bend a bit. I like the Gammy drop shot hooks but would like to try the new G finesse series of hook. I've also used a small 1/0 off set worm hook on my drop shot rig to present a more weedless approach. You have to change with that type of hook to a more traditional hook set.

I've experimented a bit with hooks but keep going back to #1 Gammy DS hooks, for finesse, I believe the rod set up has a lot to do with it, I use a Medlite Carbonlite 6'9", I've pulled in 5 pounders with it no problem. If I'm "Bubba" shotting, I let the bait dictate the hook. I just can't wrap my mind around the spin shot style hook, I may be wrong but I think I'd miss bites with it.

If I could only choose one : Gamakatsu Drop / Split Shot #2 hook size is the de facto standard  for drop shot  hooks with normal drop shot size soft plastics nose hooked or even wacky rigged  . The #2 size earns this title for being strong enough to keep bass pinned on a spinning gear drop shot set up , offers enough hook gap so that most soft plastics do not interfere with the hook set while also being thin enough to get a good hook set with just a flick of the wrist .

For nose hooked baits the Gammi split shot drop shot in 1 and 2's with the Owner Mosquito in 2 as another good option.  Around cover that requires a worm Texas hooked the Gammi EWG in size 1 and the Rebarb in size 1 as well. If I wacky hook a 3 inch Senko, the Gammi Extra Wide Gap Finesse in 1 or 1/0 do the job.  I've landed three largemouth over seven pounds on a size 2 hook.  I love the technique.
