Is Mexico still the best shot at a 10 pounder in North America? What's the hottest lake in North America for bigs currently and what time of year would you go?

A double digit bass has been something that has been on my want list for many decades.  We had a place at Santee for 7 years and never made the magic number.  I had a number of 9+ but never the magic 10+.

This year we are headed to Vero Trophy Bass Lakes in Florida to try to find that elusive 10+.  We will be fishing the last two days of March and are really hoping that this itch finally gets scratched.  Vero is a private set up and is managed for the purpose of maybe catching a fish of a lifetime.  Just hope it works out.

I am not a fan of going out of the country now that I have reached my "Golden Years".  I will admit however that a trip to El Salito is something I am still considering as I have heard nothing but good things about that place.

I picked the late March dates mostly because I don't want to fish in really hot weather and it won't be bad in Florida at the time we are going.  The typical changeable weather in Florida that time of year is always an unknown but on average it should be a very comfortable time.

That should be a great time and I wish you luck. I'm likely going to Baccarac in November, that's why I posed the question

While that's quite a ways out, make sure to keep your eyes on the requirements to re-enter the US when flying.  I had to cancel a scuba trip to Socorro Islands in May because of the new requirement to have a negative Covid test prior to boarding the return flight.  I could not risk a false positive test result to delay my return, as my championship bass tournament is the day after I was supposed to get back.  My employer also would not like me to get stuck in Mexico trying to get a negative test....

That's my biggest concern right now, but I'm cautiously optimistic that as the vaccine becomes more easily available things will be closer to normal in 6 months

perhaps we'll have a 'vax card' as proof of vaccination by then.

now, of course, you could just walk across the border.  have a family member pick you up in brownsville?

Just got back from Baccarac. According to another party at the lodge this was the toughest bite in 20 years. I did catch an 8 pounder and there were two other bigger bass caught in my group including a 9lb 4oz fish.

Congratulations on a Great Catch! I don't know if the hurricane that hit the West Coast of Mexico on Oct 15 affected Baccarrac or not, but it sure impacted El Salto and Picachos.  I just got back from Picachos and they were saying that you were lucky to catch 1 fish a day at El Salto and the bite at Picachos is just starting to come back around.  Seems like Mother Nature always wins.
I knew I shoulda re-tied!!
