Daredevles and smallmouth

Anyone else have better luck for smallies then pike with daredevles (red and white)
Also i saw someone recommend using a split ring on the reviews(one of the best ways to learn some tricks)
Do you guys have the same luck and recommend using split rings

I am going to be 60 soon and the last time I caught a smallie on a red and white daredevil was before I had peach fuzz.  And I was trolling it for sure off the back of my 12 foot Feathercraft powered by a 5 HP Evinrude.  Funny thing is I have a couple hanging on a rack by my workbench and keep thinking of giving them a try.  They do bring back some fond memories of my youth.  But, I think there are much more productive ways for enticing smallmouth.  They are old school for sure.

I'm 62 and the last time I threw a Daredevle I was probably 14. I concur that there are more effective ways to catch smallmouth. Not my go-to, but a grub on a jighead usually works.
