Hope this is the right forum. Do you all practice with lures or plugs. Had me some plugs, but they didn't last to long. I'm learning baitcasters, was wanting to see which lures worked. Place I'm practicing is in front of my house in the bottom, just grass.

You can use anything really as long as it will load up your rod adequately. If you've got a Walmart nearby go and buy a couple of cheap jigs, crankbaits or whatever and just use that.

Or just slide a bullet sinker on your line and tie a swivel or clip of some kind on the end of your line.

Sinkers. Just use sinkers. Once you get more confident with your bait casters, tie on some other stuff. T rigged soft baits, take the hooks off some cheap cranks, etc. Of course the best place to practice is on the water, preferably with fish nearby. I've actually caught more than one while untangling a bird's nest.

I don't know if they're still made, but I used to have a practice weight, that looked like a bank sinker, but was rubber on the exterior. I think what I had was 1/2 oz. They could be used indoors for flipping practice too.

Otherwise, when I practiced I just did it with a lure and on the water, but spent the time concentrating on the casting and not as much on fishing.

One thing for sure, whatever you use, make sure it's heavy enough for the reel. I know that I tried casting 1/4 oz lures and although I can do that now, a heavier weight was much easier to cast than when I first started. Some reels just do not do well with lighter weights, and what I started with certainly didn't.  ~b~

The practice plugs sold nowdays are trash.  They are made of plastic and they break at the neck after using a few times.  If you can find an older rubber version with a brass tie, that would be best.
