Looking for a good budget Medium power casting rod for throwing more finesse style baits.
The only stupid question is the one you don't ask!

No matter how much we know about fishing there is always more to learn!

What do "you" consider a good budget price range? This info will help narrow down the field.

I've never used the Dobyns colt series but I'd go hold one if I could find a place nearby that sells them. I have a Sierra , and a few champions and Dobyns never disappoints.

Now if you want real budget the Berkely lightning is a good rod for the money. Under 50 bucks. It's got it's down sides. It's a bit heavy and of course for under 50 you aren't looking at top tier components but under 100 it's not going to be much different.

I have a 6'6" M/F Lightning Rod Shock that I might try out as a jerk bait rod but was thinking of something a step up from that. I do like Dobyn's and I'm sure the Colt is quality for the price...just wondering what else is out there comparable?

BPS PRO QUALIFIER in whatever length you want. 99$, works well, the guides look a bit ugly but they do the job.

Old Fishermen never die, their rods just go limp.

I just picked up a Falcon LowRider and really like it, but it's about $120.

Be sure to also look at Abu Garcia rods, I have a Vigilante and like it, but the Vendetta and Vengeance also get good reviews.

I've always been a fan of the Lightning Rods, but have y'all seen what they've done with their grips? It's disgusting.

Yes, they have ugly clear plastic reel seats now...I really think that was a design flaw!

If you want another option over the Dobyns I have several Fenwick HMG rods that have served me well for many years. They have name brand parts, full length handles (personal preference), Fuji guides, and offer a 6'6" or 7' length in their Medium power. Both start at 1/4 oz lure weight and have a fast tip.

I do not have any or ever used one but they have a lower end Fenwick Eagle. Doesn't look bad in the pictures I see its still a full handle and has plenty of guides. That is my biggest knock on the Berkley rods is they have 6 guides on a 7' rod. The Eagle also has stainless guides but 9 of them on a 6'6" rod. Much better. These Medium power Eagle rods can be had in one or 2 piece design are listed at $59.95.

They also just don't feel right. I saw 'em and though "Oh, that looks like some sort of Winn grip material!" Then I held one and thought "YUCK!"
It's not grippy and just has a sloppy feel to it because of the shape and those cut-outs. I think I could build a nicer grip out of duct tape.

I'm in the same situation.  I just ordered a Berkley E Motion for $37.  They are normally $80 so I figured why not.

There are so many good budget rods it is hard to pick a maker. Plus, a name on a rod is just...a name on a rod. They don't come with magical powers. With any rod there are things you look at and try.

These are the basic things to determine.
1) what is the rod's major use?
2) what length is best for it's use?
3) what is the best butt grip length shape?
4) with a medium power rod, do you want a parabolic, medium, fast or extra fast tip.

Pick several rods with the rod length and handle shape you want. For each rod try these tips. Put a hand near the handle top and the other hand near the center of the rod. Flex the rod several times to determine if the power of the butt is what you want.  Next, place a hand near the rod's center and the other on the tip of the rod. Flex the tip and look at the bend of the rod. The closer the bend to the tip. the faster the rod's action. Power is the butt to center of the rod and action is center to tip. Numbers on a rod for power and action change with the maker. YOU determine for yourself what you like. After you try several rods, one will feel better than the others.
