Spinning rod for pitching to heavy cover

Ok my brother loves fishing like I do. However he so far refuses to use my bait casting reels. He likes spinning reels and I dont care that is his choice. But I need a heavy rod for him. When I am pitching in heavy grass etc he is at a big disadvantage as he cant pull them out. So Im looking at options to make him a pitching rod setup that we can fish this style together.

Looking at something in the $100 price range. I plan to eventually get him on a bait caster but until then this will have to suffice.

Any suggestions???

Falcon used to make their Carolina Lizard Dragger rod in a spinning model in both a heavy and extra heavy and they were perfect for this technique. Not sure if they still make that model but if not you may be able to find one on Fleabay.

I know it's a little more than your listed price but the Dobyns Sierra SA 705 SF looks like it would do the job well if you can't find anything else.

That is a great find as well. I glanced through the Dobyns rods but never saw a Heavy spinning rod listed. Guess I missed it or didn't go up into the Sierra series figuring price would be a little more than I was wanting to pay. Still may be the better option though. Ill keep looking for now and add it to the maybe list.

My first thought as well.

However Steve you could also look into any of the Catfish Series of rods made by many manufacturers. If they can haul in those 40-100 lb Cats they can drag a Bass out of Grass.

Yeah I have thought it might need be be something like a saltwater rod. Im thinking those may be like the catfish rod I have used for him. They are really not all that great for what we are discussing.

That 705 Sierra from Dobyns is looking like a great rod I may just go over on spend a little more. It is really the only heavy rated bass rod ive found just quickly searching.

I purchased a Dobyns 704 spinning rod this spring for heavy grass and lily pads and put 30 lb power pro braid on the reel. best rod I have ever had. never liked braid much but this set up works great

I'm guessing it's the original Silver Series? They were good rods for the time. Falcon was all I used in the late 90's - early 2000.

I used to use those Lizard Draggers for flipping/pitching jigs. I used the spinning version mostly for Carolina rigging and occasionally for flipping/pitching.

The Dobyns SA705sf is the best if it has to be spinning gear.

Make sure to look for a very strong reel for it. Many times the bail will bend when dragging heavy weeds.

I've done it some but flipping the bail as the bait hits the water means taking your hand off the handle to flip the bail cost me a couple of fish. Sneaky buggers hit the bait as the bait hit the water.

Diawa has a couple of 7' and an 8' spinning rod in their Beefstick series that would work well for heavy cover.

They're fiberglass, so practically indestructible. I have several of them that I use for saltwater, and have used them for tossing big wooden Striper lures up to 6 oz.

They won't be the most sensitive since they're fiberglass, and they tend to be a little heavy weight wise, but you can't break them! The price is great too!
