Well if appears that I'm going to get a Dobyns 908. I'll be using this rod to throw big swimbaits, Huds , Osprey etc. What would be a good reel to place on this rod? Looking for one with great drag and that will hold up to these type of baits. Round or low profile doesn't matter. Your thoughts ?

SHIMANO TRANX I had a 300 and now have a 200 hundred on my setup. Bullet proof and strong. The 300 is stronger than the 200 but the 200 fits the swimbaits I throw.

Tranx, or Tatula HD will do the trick. Tatula is gonna be more cost efficient. Both great reels.

I was going to add that and the Super Duty Wide. Super Duty Wide is available in a 5:1.

I bought a super duty and it felt restricted or something on the reel. The Shimanos just seem more free or easier to reel. IMO I know it could have been to much grease in the super duty etc....Lews are great reels and I have owned quite a few of them . The Shimano breaking system trumps the LEWS IMO. Fishing reels are much like the metal detectors I review. Everybody has their favorites..

Sorry but I have to go with the Tranx 300 also. This reel was built for the job at hand.

And I am a Daiwa diehard.

I agree that it is probably the best choice for the job.  Could not resist a dig on the folks that are so Shimano committed that nothing else will do.   LOL.   I wonder if they also have a Shimano Tattoo ?

Diawa Zillion TWS HD. They are available on eBay at great prices. I have two for HBF and A rigs. They only come in 7.3 ratio.

I should! Too funny Bud! But hey, I do notice that most reel techs- almost all of them are shimano all the way! That says something right there...

And you are so right! Nothing else will do! As far as baitcast reels go. I've tried them all and keep coming back to the one and only!

And here is a reel suggestion... if you can find them...

I was doing my pawn shop rounds today and found a reel I had sold last year in the pawn shop for more than 3 times what I had originally paid for it. They had $70 on it and the rod. A Browning 7.1:1 with triple carbon fiber drag washers, both magnetic and centrifugal brakes and 10 bearing count. It was top of the line Browning at one time and sold new for $129. I sold it to some neighborhood kid last year and now it is in a local pawn shop. One hot rod little reel right there and built fairly well by Bass Pro in Korea at same place Johnny Morris reels are made . A micro body smaller than any baitcast reel I have had before. A quality sweet little reel... you can find them on ebay from time to time too.

This reel is as good as any top of the line Bass Pro reel including Johnny Morris signature series.

I will throw a vote for the Super Duty 300. Lew's customer service has been nothing short of phenomenal for me. I haven't used the 300 but I have faith if it wasn't perfect they would make it perfect. I really like the Adjustable Centrifugal Braking system Lews has in some of their models. The dual braking on the 300 is new to me but should still work great. The concept is nothing new.
