Going to Briery Creek tomorrow for fist time, supposed to have great bass in central VA. Lots of stories of 10+ lb fish, supposedly lots of standing timber, brush and sunken trees. I will be in kayak.

Anyone have ideas on baits locations for tomorrow, it has been warm here lately, should be 40's in am but rise to low 60's, blue sky. Some internet stories talk about finding thermocline depth, does that work in Summer and do I want to fish above, below or in it?

Address is 1203 landing lane farmville va

Ditto.

I fished there earlier this year with a buddy who moved nearby. After it was built, it was stocked with Florida strain largemouth bass. At least a couple of 16+ pound largemouth bass have come out of there, although they were smaller than the 16-1/4 pound Virginia State Record.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, we didn't catch anything over three pounds.

Went well, started slow but hooked up with a couple folks that fish there regularly and they showed me the way, so to speak:). Between the three of us we caught probably 11 ranging from 14 - 19 inches. The lake is well known for monster LB in VA. Regularly produces 10lb+ LM.

The lake has tons of timber and submerged standing trees, much much deeper than I usually fish often 20 feet deep. Fishing a deep almost grass/weedless lake I was really able to use my Elite Ti7 to its fullest.

Gonna go back in couple weeks.

Thanks for the report and glad you were able to hook up with some folks who put you on to fish and hope next time you can find some of the bigger fish that you know are in there.

Good job on figuring them out. With a history of double digit bass, I'd definitely spend more time on it this spring :-*

I've been dying to get down there, but without my own boat it makes it tough.  I understand the depth issue which is why I need to take more than just a john boat... I want electronics and a foot pedal controlled TM.

It's on my bucket list too.... and not all that far. I need to work on that this year. :-*

Well if you ever need someone to hold your back seat down so it doesn't blow away... let me know.  With a 1 year old and a job where I work every other saturday, it makes it a little tough but you don't know til ya try!

Electric motors only so most people I see are in kayaks or john boats.  Even with out a fishfinder there are plenty of spots where it looks like fish will be holding. There is a lot of standing timber, some creeks coming in. Power lines going across which usually means road or depression underneath.

I recently posted this on another site after talking to conservation officer in charge of lake:

"Every year they do a spring electric shock to see bass population. Spring of 2017 they noticed # of bass is up, most bass in size of 18 - 20", however trophy bass population is down.
Last shock they got one 24" (8-9lbs), and a lot of 18-20" in 4-6lb range...quantity up, trophy sizes down.

The lake is stocked with 250,000 1" - 4" bluegill each year and they have reported increases in natural bluegill which is very positive for the lake and bass - Looks like I am switching to Blugill patterns from shad:)"

Definitely worth the effort to get there.

Are boats with big motors allowed (using only their trolling motors to fish)?

I believe I was wrong and stand corrected, I looked at VDIF website on Briery and it said motors allowed up to 10hp or less.

OK thanks!

I think that generally means they allow boats with bigger motors as long as they aren't used to run the boat. I wonder if anyone has ever taken a portable generator on such a trip...  :-*
