Being a self taught urban bass fishing angler, the canals of South Florida have served as my bass fishing classroom and playground for the past 30 years. These canals have taught me so much in regards to the behaviors of the green fish I hunt.

I swear urban bass are smarter than their lake and swamp brethren. Their abilities to adapt to their urban environments are outstanding. Take for example, how the bass have learned that hanging out inside a shopping cart sitting on its side along the bottom, offers the best protection from my baits. Or the discarded a/c unit. Those wiley bass know those vents will shear off my fishing line in a second. Who knew that a sofa, once comfortable to sit and lay on for someone, when dumped into a canal will also serve as a sanctuary for bass to sit and hang around on as well. My last observation of the day. Punching is not just reserved for thick matted vegetation, it can also be applied to break through the packed, dense mat of a wind blown styrofoam cups and plastic bottles.   :-*

Crazy isn't it? This type of cover and conditions is/was my normal for years!! So the next time anyone of you come by and visit Miami, and drive by a canal that looks like crap, just for giggles, go check it out. I bet if you look hard enough, you will see a hawg of a bass, slowly swim into the shadows right past the dumped picnic table...  lo

Picnic table pattern is awesome. Been there done that. And any sewer tube will have bass near them.

The "picnic table pattern" and outhouse pattern" were my go-to's back in the day when Truman got so high.

Also "back in the day", LOZ would have really nice log-jam pockets. These things would fill up with all kinds of junk besides wood. Lawn chairs and other dock furniture was a favorite. An umbrella gave me a tournament five-pounder once. And the runaway boat dock foam was EVERYWHERE. One day I spent a couple of casts around a rather attractive and well-endowed mannequin.

Ahh. Those were the days.

I can relate to the shopping cart pattern, pulled some great fish out of urban man made spots in the DFW, TX area. I actually consider myself to be an urban angler, catching fish out of sketchy places with skyscrapers looming overhead. It's definitely fun finding those little spots in urban areas that hold lunkers.

Funny thing is, Bassinlou ain't even kidding.

Good read Lou, the stuff we find in our canals is quite interesting. Public parks too.

Thanks Rick. Yeah, everything I mentioned was not exaggerated, sadly. I guess that's why when you and I hit up the Lakes in Central FL we are at peace with the beauty, because we know what we have waiting for us on our home waters.  :(

I've caught quite a few around a shopping cart... come to think of it every time was in S FL! Lou is right, there's some awesome bass attracting structure in the urban jungle. I grew up fishing a crystal clear limestone pit in S FL and the best structure in the pit was a sunken VW van. Boy I caught some fish out of that thing!

Funny you say this.... I thought that some of the areas I fish, it was actually called junk fishing, but no, it means something completely different....  lo lo
