CONCORD, N.H. -- An upcoming fly fishing program offers a chance to learn about the traditional and timeless sport of -fishing.  The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department's "Let's Go Fishing" Program is hosting its "Fly-Fishing A-Z" on Saturday, May 6, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday, May 7, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Fish and Game Headquarters in Concord , N.H. You must attend both sessions.

There is no charge for this program.

Designed primarily for first-time fly-anglers, the workshop will cover the basics of equipment, fly casting, stream ecology, knot tying, safety and fish identification on Saturday.  On Sunday,  we'll pull on our waders and head out to a local fishing pond where students will put their new skills to the test!

To reserve your spot in this program you must pre-register. Go to www.fishnh.com/fishing/lets-go-fishing.html and select "Fly Fishing" and then "Register for a class."  Class space is limited, and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.

The class is open to anyone age 13 and over, however, those 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult.  All equipment is provided. No fishing license is required to participate.

Over the past ten years, the Fish and Game Department's "Let's Go Fishing" program has taught thousands of children and adults to be safe, ethical and successful anglers. The program is federally funded through the Sport Fish Restoration Program.

The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department works to conserve, manage and protect the state's fish and wildlife and their habitats, as well as providing the public with opportunities to use and appreciate these resources.

That's a good program. I don't think I could get a handle on fly fishing.

I want to give it a try someday. It does look like it has a learning curve but I like a challenge every now and then.  ~sun

Sounds like a great way to get into fly fishing! It's not as difficult as folks think it is, but is different than using baitcasting or spinning tackle, so a mind set change needs to be implemented.

I firmly believe learning to fly fish for bass, made me a better angler with other tackle when chasing bass, simply because you have to change your thinking process to be successful with the fly rod. Patience is needed too, and not a bad thing to develop anyway with any type of fishing.

Of course, fly fishing is a lot of fun too, but I admit I'm biased when it comes to fly fishing!  lo

It does seem like it would be a lot of fun. In fact that is one of the reasons I want to give it a try sometime.
