I live in Florida but there are times at first light in the winter months when the temperature is below freezing. Years ago I purchased a pair of insulated bibs just for such mornings when I go fishing. I can't began to tell you how warm they are. You can feel the body heat they hold in. If you fish in freezing or near freezing weather I highly recommend a pair of insulated bibs.

I used to use these when I was stationed out west. They work great and with some shopping they can be much cheaper than other alternatives. The biggest thing for me is that they are quickly removable as the sun comes up, unlike thermal underwear  :surrender:

I have a BPS med weigh Goretex Suit I wear.  While in Alaska those bibs youns are talking about were real poplar.  Easy on and easy off.

They are a requirement up here in the Northeast. Throw an insulated parka over them and it's a done deal.  :)

Tru dat!
I have two pair inside the house for when I know it's cold out and another two, older pair out in the shop. One for working on cars etc. the other just for when I go out there playing around and it's a little colder than I thought it was.

Any specific characteristics  to look out for in a good insulated bib?

I fish for Black bass as abank fisherman on the San Joaquin Delta River.

Depends, there are a lot of styles out there.

Right now I have a pair of Dickies that are bibs but zip up the front like ski pants, they are waterproof, warm as heck, almost too warm for Texas and wind proof, only downside is that you can't get to your pockets under them.  Wife bought them for me on sale, I only use them now when I'm surf fishing in the winter.

I like to have the lighter ones around here, and prefer to have them more traditional in style that way I can access my pockets in the clothes under them.  Walls used to make a good inexpensive pair in two weights, only thing was they ran about a size smaller than what they listed them at.

All I wear in the winter are bibs, usually unlined carpenter style. I like the pockets, and can add a pair of shorts or something under them and handle most of the chilly days around here.

I had no idea what to look for. I just wanted something warm. I ordered the Walls brand from Cabela's. Because I'm only 5' 7" 185 I ordered the "Large, Short, Waist 38-40" and thought the length would be too long but they were a perfect fit. During months of mild or hot weather I have a regular pair of denim bibs and another pair with the legs cut off similar to shorts. When moving around in a bass boat I find bibs are the way to go because my pants don't keep sliding down.

I like my Carharts!
They have some that the bib part is insulated and ones where just the pant part is insulated. The fully insulated ones have a zipper all the way up the bib. The non insulated does not.

For hunting "up north" I bought a pair on Insulated Bibs and a matching jacket that is a two-part jacket, meaning there is an inside jacket that is warm enough for 30* up and and parka jacket that it zips into for the real cold days. The Hood zips onto either jacket.

I used just Insulated pants & jacket combo for years and could not believe how much warmer the Bibs keep you. Somehow that extra little bit keeps the warmth in your body.

Bibs are they way to go either fishing or hunting.

Good advice here. Why be shivering cold when fishing.

I have a pair of Carhartt bibs I have used while out hunting, but they were a pain when you had to go to the bathroom.  I ended up finding a pair of thinsulate, waterproof pants and it was much better.  AS a scuba diver, the best insulated material I found was wool or some performance fleece, even when it was wet.  I once had a dry suit that had a leak and I didn't realize it until I started removing my drysuit and say my entire top was soaked, but I was warm!  Layering is the best, like Mike said, because you can remove layers as it gets warmer.
There is nothing like sharing any moment outdoors with someone special!
