Bank Fishing: Turtle or a Hare

When bank fishing, what category would you consider yourself you fall under Turtle? Or a Hare?

In other words, do you run and gun while bank fishing or do you take your time and break down sections of water at a time?

I personally fall under the hare category. I cover a lot of water looking for active fish. Seeking visible targets of cover as I go along. If the fishing is slow and time is on my side, I am becoming more proficient in becoming a turtle and slowing down.

Walk to a spot and fan cast. As far up the bank I can cast, I will walk twice that distance to the next stopping point and start fan casting again.

I probably start out as a hare and morph into a turtle, especially if I'm not familiar with a particular body of water.

If possible I like to put on waders and get in the water. I start by parallel casting the shoreline, and then make progressive fan casts until I have done a complete 180. Then I move on down the shoreline just beyond my last cast and start the process over again. I fish this pretty quickly, searching for active fish. If I get a bite or find some compelling visible cover I slow way down and work it thouroughly.

I'm more of a Turtle and will give each spot at least half an hour before moving on to the next spot. If I can find a map of the lake or a good read out on google earth I wll study the spot and pick out the spots I want to try.

Start off as a Turtle, if I find a pattern I transition to a hare. Otherwise I go nice and slow. Fan cast and break down an area before I move.

Turtle. I do the same with my kayak. Find a spot and search with 2-3 different search baits, then move on.

Any bank around here is normally a dock or a small cut out area of the bank so limits the options lol

That's what I do also. The lure I'm using usually dictates how fast I fish. I almost always throw a horny toad first and cover water pretty quickly. If not many takers I'll usually switch up to a weightless mag speed worm and slow way down casting at every piece of structure and point that I can find. I like dead sticking them.

I try to be a hare because my inclination is to be a turtle and just sit in one place wondering why they aren't biting instead of moving on and trying more areas.

Since I am usually fishing crowded piers I'm more like the rotting log on the weekends, because if you move you will definitely lose your spot and might not find another one.   

During the week when it is less crowded I am turtle like, slowly moving up and down the pier.

That's what I can't stand about pier fishing.

But it is just a great experience when you catch something and have 20 people who have never caught a fish before tell you how to bring it in.   

Its not too bad during the week ... except during tourist season.

That's why you get up before dawn and hit the pier. I like how you catch a fish and tangle 10 or 15 other lines.

Turtle or Hare, it all depends on the fish.  How do they want it that day.  I will change techniques until I find what they want at that particular time of day..  Sometimes dead sticking, sometimes weightless ripping along the surface, sometimes jerk and stop,  walking along the bottom just like a zara spook on the surface.  It all depends on the activity level of the fish and their willingness to eat.  I never know until I get to the lake.  You have to figure it out!
