Just to be clear, since we are going back to school...white is not a color, its the absence of all colors.  ;D

Dude did you sleep through science class? White is all colours combined and black is the absence of colour. Lol!!!

well then, LMG.  where does the white go when the snow melts?  don't tell me it's not there because my back still hurts from last year's shoveling.

Its not the white you have to worry about, its the yellow.  ~shade

Lol! I like that, Mr Farty pants!! Seriously though Rodney, a lookup of indigenous species in your area is a great tip. I often keep traps off the Dock so that I can closely examine colours. I photo crayfish, small bass etc that I catch since it helps me sort out the colours I will need. Colours do change throughout the year as well. It helps my painting and tying.  I feel that picking up on those small details gives you an edge over trying to buy mass produced lures and then trying to fit round pegs in square holes as far as presentations go. Like I have said before, colours are a problem up here since most lures sold in retail stores aren't even close to the colours that work best here. That's why I started making my own.

I will drive by the two large lakes here in the city and ask the old timers what they are finding in the bellies of the cats and hybrids. (Most don't keep LM). That usually give me a basis to start with when tying.

I've found if you are close you're most likely good, light conditions change making color change underwater. If you, as suggested on another thread, carry a set of sharpies you're able to make changes on the fly. I tend to carry maybe 4 colors and versions of them. I've also found pike are fussy only when you are fishing for them, otherwise they'll eat any bait no matter the color when you're not after them. ~roflmao
