Culling tags holder

Greetings to everyone,

Where do you guys keep your Culling Tags?  I used to keep my in a storage bag in the front storage compartment.  I got tired of digging in the storage bag so I put them in a gallon zip lock freezer bag and dump them in the live well.  While driving around I got to rethinking about that and decided to try something new.  I'm going to play with it during my Fishing For Freedom scouting trips.

I spent less than $5.00 dollars to make this Culling Tag Holder.  Equipment needed was a Livewell, Culling Tags; Zip Strips; Side cutters and Nickel Plated Solid Ring.

Side Cutters and Culling Tags


Zip Strips and O-Ring


Attach the Zip Strips and Ring to the live well locking device


Final Step is attach the Culling Tags to the ring


We'll see how this works out in the up coming pre-fishing trips for Fishing for Freedom.

I like it Don!

I use the Ardent culling balls and clipped them directly to my livewell's latch but they drop off if the latch is in the open position.

I use these culling tags to mark my big bass and the smallest bass.  These culling tags pictured are part of a culling system tournament guys use to keep track of their weigh / size of their catch.  Once you get your limit and you catch a bigger bass.   You can look in the livewell and bring out your smallest bass and switch them out.  Again by law in some / most states you can only have (5) bass in possession.

Here in Central Texas the only tag fish we have are the ones from Department of Fish and Wildlife.  Sometimes they do studies and they'll tag fish to conduct movement etc.

Lastly when you're getting ready to bag your fish for the weigh in.  Its much easier to grab a hold of the culling tag and to pull the fish out of the livewell.

I see now. I've never fished in a tournament and I don't watch the fishing tv shows.  Makes sense now.

Interesting idea Donald, let us know how it works, I like it. I don't like Ardent cull tags, some of mine fell apart and won't stay together!!

If I'm not mistaken, they have lifetime warranty. Any of mine come apart, I'm certainly looking to have them replaced.

They sent a replacement and a couple of springs, the replacement fell apart.

Great idea Don. Been bouncing some ideas around myself. Mine doesn't have the locks so I couldn't use this. I've been thinking of a "L" bracket with slots/holes for each clip mounted to the underside of the lid.

The Culling Tag holder worked well for the most part.  I put it to the test this past Saturday.  The only issue that I encountered was closing the lid quickly.  A couple of the Tags got caught under the lid.  After getting home I modified each one of the culling tags as you can see in the pictures below.  I trimmed about 4"inches off the plastic tubing.   Now when the lid closes all of the tags swing forward and down into the livewell.

So another question about culling tags.
Are the colors predetermined as to which fish they go on? Like is the green for the biggest fish and the red for the smallest, or do you put any tag on a fish and then write down the weight of the fish and what color tag you put on it?

No.  You pick a tag and write down the weigh of that fish.  There's a little white board and a black marker that comes  with the tags.  You can write on the tags also like #1, 2, 3 and so on.

 The tags a have now there's a knob on it you just dial in your weight nice no writing it down now just look at the weights.

Don.... Keep an eye on your fish...Now that you've shortened the line it could stress out the fish by keeping them from getting to the bottom of the well like they always do.. As an FYI I use the same hooks but I've used white poly rope {it floats} and about every inch or so I've wrapped a different color of cheap electrical tape around it... I usually go white for the smallest fish up to Blue for the biggest.. I use white, yellow, orange, red, green and blue. Easy to track which fish to cull without having to write down weights. I think I have a total of $5.00 in the whole setup.
