All you need is a few permanent markers in the basic colors red, blue, green, yellow, orange, black, and chartreuse. say they are bitting a red trap just take your red marker and mark up a chrome trap now you have a red trap another example say you want a black buzz bait get the black marker and color the whole thing black . Or this is a good one for you say they are bitting a spinnerbait with gold and silver blades all you have is one with two silver blades take your yellow marker and paint one of the blades and it is gold or a crankbait that needs a orange belly and so on and so forth it has helped me out a many a time.

Great tip Marshall!!!  ~c~

For about 20 years or so I have had a Plano 3730 full of Sharpies in fine medium and wide points, paint markers in various colors, assorted nail polishes and Spike-It Blade dips. Saved the day for me many times.

Good read! Another good idea SS! A roll of lead tape for weighting cranks and jerks on the fly is another thing to carry and cheaper than Suspend Dots.

Permanent markers are a mainstay for us fly flingers/tyers too. I don't get too concerned over small details with color, but sometimes a change makes all the difference. I've been able to "match the hatch" with markers, that I couldn't do with the materials I had.

Depending on how you look at it, good or bad, permanent markers are not really permanent on most lures, as the color fades quickly. That means a color change doesn't ruin a lure, and often a change only needs to be short term.

Also, if you look around, particularly in art supply shops, there are other brands & colors available besides Sharpie. They're usually a bit more in price, but can provide almost infinite color changes.
I have some in an olive color I really like for my fly tying, as many of the baitfish I see have an olive colored back, and the green Sharpie color isn't even close.  ;)
