Anyone on here make preacher jigs?I would like to try making some. What material do you use, size of head, size and type of hook?

You could use a swim bait head or minnow head jig mold with the hooks the manufacturer recommends.
As far as the body goes, hair, feathers, and a mix of the them will work. Google Preacher jigs and there is a thread of pics, yhou can get some good ideas from them.

Rodney, think there may be some youtube stuff too...  at least as far as ideas.  then it's all about figuring out tieing in the bucktails and feathers... or synthetic hair...

boundaries only where your imagination stops.

Find a Youtube video about tying Lefty's Deceivers. It's a fly pattern that's been around since the 50's. A "preacher jig" is tied the same way. You can make them any size you wish, big or small.

As Rodney has said, there's various jig heads that could be used.

I would use strung saddle hackle for the tails, bucktail for the body & would add some Flash. Personally, I like a product called Polar Flash as it has real good qualities to it. There's various threads too, which often boils down to personal choice. I've been tying with Danville Flat Nylon thread for many years and it works well for tying jigs or larger flies. You can also find heavier nylon thread at sewing stores that works fine for tying too.

Actually, as far as tying goes, once you learn the basic's, you could tie almost any type of jig or fly.

Here is a picture of my first try at tying a preacher jig. These are tied on a walleye head, the top one is a 3/4 oz.with a 5/0 635 black laser hook, middle is 1/2 oz.with a 4/0 hook and bottom is 3/8 with a 3/0 hook.I had to modify my spare mold to take the larger diameter hook.

nice.

anyone with any thoughts on orientation of the eye?  inline vs cross?

bigjim5589

That's something I've never given any consideration. I've only tied bucktail jigs of any type on a head with an inline hook eye. Really can't see it making any difference.

Gaspumper, they look good to me! I have that Walleye jig mold too & like that style.  :)
