Just bought this reel used. Must have never been cleaned; and this is a maiden voyage for me cleaning a Curado. I'm having to go deep because of all the grease and grime; so; I'm taking my time. I have not got the nylon idle gear "A" off the drive shaft. It's being stubborn. Any suggestions to pulling this gear? Thanks

Mike Cork

On the bottom of the drive shaft there is a c-clip. Remove the clip. There will be a small washer, then the bearing, remove both. Lastly is the plate used to screw the drive shaft to the frame. Remove that plate and the gear will slip off.

Thanks Mike, I was just getting ready to write I figured it out.

Mike, another question. How do you press the pinion bearing out of the frame? I would just leave it and oil; but like I said; a lot of dirt in here.

Mike Cork

When they are dirty they can stick. On really bad ones I use a socket that just fits and tap it out gently. To much or using a screwdriver or something can damage the bearing.

I had to break this service into time frames; so it took a while; but got it back together. It was a little tight on the retrieve until I use it on several cast. I went light on the use of grease and oil. Only problem is there is a little back play in the crank. Is this do to maybe a bad roller clutch bearing? Or; something else?
Also; the roller bearing dropped out of the side plate; to make sure I placed it back in correctly; I want to ask. I place it back in with the bearing markings toward the inside of the reel (an arrow turning counter clock wise, with the word lock). Is this correct? Thanks

You may want to pull the ARB bearing back out and wipe some of the grease off it. You may have put a little too much on and thats why you are getting some back play. Otherwise you should be good. Its only made to spin one way.
My wife says she is gonna leave me if I go fishing one more time........lord how I will miss that woman.

I'm I correct that the AR bearing should be inserted showing the LOCK Arrow in the counter clockwise direction when viewing from the inside of the side plate? Didn't use grease in the AR bearing; put a drop of oil on a Q-Tip and ran it around the inside. But; the reel had a lot of grease inside. I not sure this reel had ever been cleaned; very dirty and gummy inside and out.

Mike Cork

If you put the ARB in backwards the handle won't spin forward. The bearing only spins one way. So you must have it correct.

These bearing can develop play over time, a small amount of back play can be normal. Now if it's so much that you feel it's not working and the anti reverse dog is catching then it may need replaced. The most common failure after cleaning is too much grease, but you used oil, so that's not it. Could be just a little wear.

Mike, I went back inside the reel. I think it has to be wear. Not a lot; but noticeable. I'm sure it was from lack of maintenance from the person I bought it from; and all the grease I cleaned out of the reel. I've gone though a Curado 200d and a Revo SX since then. So; thanks for the help!
