Being from LA I'm not too fond of fishing with much more than jigs on cypress knees and debry, to fishing a trick stick or a sinko wacky style close to the shore. Crank baits have not seemed to give me any luck... ever. But I hear of people constantly catching on them. Hints? Tips?

Crank baits is matter of contact. Bang them off of dock pylons, cypress knees and the trunk its self, bounce it through the rocks. Don't get to caught up in color. I've found a black and chartreuse will catch fish nearly year round in our area.

I caught quite a few fish off of those cypress knees w/ squarebills and spinnerbaits.  mike nailed - it's all about contact.  can't be afraid to throw these into places where they're gonna bang off of the knees.  yep, you'll get hung up every once in a while but there are some tricks you can pick up on to help you free them.  you'll donate a few, but then you do that w/ your jigs, too, yes?

It always surprises me how rarely cranks get hung up when fishing wood/timber etc. Get basic natural colors and keep throwing them into and around everything. You'll catch fish! ~fff
