Now I've used/done this for many years!
I've experienced GREAT success with it!!!!!!!!
Many have heard it before BUT few use it. 

I think pictures/videos stick in our minds better so I went searching YouTube to see if I could find a good one.
After searching and viewing many I found a good one, and get this, it's titled, 'The BEST Bass Fishing Tip Ever'. 
Many doubt it works.
Many think only clear soda works.
Some think only Mt. Dew, 7-UP, Sprite sodas work. ( some say it's the 'citric acid' that stops it others say it's the carbonation which I believe cause I've used dark sodas before and worked the same)
(got an angling buddy who feels 'only' Coke works, Heck that stuff will take rust off of metal  )

I've seen Elite Anglers talk about it including Jonathan VanDam.
I've used it at least 12+ times in over the last 10 years and never had it NOT work.
I know Tournament anglers that did it on early morning bites and put it in the live wells after doing it and the fish not only lived to weigh-in BUT till a SUCCESSFUL  release. 

From experience, ANY soda works (POP as us Northern Boys call it  )


Briefly in words,
When you catch a Bass that's bleeding, weather it's gills or throat that are shedding blood, GIVE IT A DRINK before releasing.
Simply pour some soda in its mouth and it will run out it's gill plates down it's sides.

This is an important step,
dunk the Bass back in the water and bring it out to be sure it quit bleeding.
If not, give it another drink, dunk and check again
Repeat this untill you no longer see blood.
May take 2-4 drinks before it stops BUT it WILL STOP!

Lastly, take a swig of your 'soda' and GO FISHING!

I had heard about this for many years and never tried it. Mostly just relied on my Rejuvinade to take care of them and it was about 99 percent effective.

Two summers ago I was fishing a tournament with Ron Fogelson and I caught a 6 pounder (big bass of the tournament only because the guy who actually caught big bass, his died and was ineligible). My fish deep throated a frog. When we got her in the boat and removed the hook she was gushing. Not just bleeding but it was like an artery had been cut. Ron grabbed his Mt. Dew and poured it into her throat letting it run out both sides of the gills.

That fish quit bleeding almost instantly. Made a huge believer out of me.

Thats amazing to me. I wonder if it works on human blood. I might have to give it a try next time I get a cut. It could be helpful or even life saving at some point.

"Here is where the soda comes into play, that might help to save a fish's life. Use a soft drink that has some citric acid (Mountian Dew, Sprite, Mellow Yellow, 7UP). Once the fish begin to bleed from the gills or gullet, pour the soda on the affected area. The acid in the soda will make the capillaries shrink and reduce and may stop hemorrhage."

"It's the phosphoric acid in Coke. Fish flesh is susceptible to acid. It causes the wound to "cook" essentially. It's long been known you can cold cook shrimp in lemon juice, for the same reason. Sprite doesn't contain phosphoric acid; neither does Mountain Dew. And yet, as the video above clearly showed, the bleeding stopped almost immediately. So how do we explain it?

And Coke and Dr. Pepper, etc. don't have citric acid.

So on with the study/research. 

I than found this.

I think it's the liquid itself that promotes the healing not an ingredient within it:
Logic; "The way a fish's blood coagulates is opposite that of humans. We humans need air for it to coagulate. Fish, on the other hand, need water."

So why can't you just pour bottled water down or better yet, just put in the Live Well.....and most everyone's either has had or seen a deep hooked or gill hooked fish die/dead at weigh in after being in a Live Well.


So on with the study/research. 

So then I found this,
from Outdoor Canada, Gord Pyzer

Dr. Bruce Tufts, who is a professor at Queen's University in Kingston, and specializes in fish physiology. By the way, Bruce is also the person who documented the destructive and damaging effects of weighing in bass and walleyes at tournaments "in air."  This led to the much more fish-friendly Shimano Water Weigh-In System, which has saved the lives of thousands of bass.

When I asked Bruce why Coca-Cola, or similar sodas seemingly work their magic and stop the bleeding of a fish, he said, "I've discussed this with my physiology colleagues and we're pretty confident we can explain it. Carbon dioxide causes the blood vessels in the gills to constrict. Some things causes vasodilatation, some cause  vasoconstriction. So the carbonation in pop causes the gills to vasoconstrict and stop bleeding.  It is a pretty cool scientific explanation."

Just as cool, Bruce added, is that he believes anglers might get the same effect as Coke, "if they threw something like Tums in the livewell water that would increase the bicarbonate and then also raise carbon dioxide.  It's a physiologist's playground!"

So, there you have it folks.  As well as carrying pliers, forceps, rulers and scales in your boat, you might want to add a bottle of  Tums and several small cans of soda water from the grocery store, which contain nothing more than pure water infused with carbon dioxide.

NOW THE LAST EXPLANATION IS WHAT I'M GOING WITH!   

If you don't believe any of these explanations............you'll have to do the research on your own.....cause I'm already on to ANOTHER TOPIC.

Oh and you now have ALL witnessed an 'anal mind' researching....but rest assurd...I read a LOT more in order to find these. 

Man I wish I DIDN'T NEED TO KNOW the 'WHYS' of EVERYTHING! 

But it does fill my time during 'hard water season' and it keeps the Bait Monkey at bay.

Yep been doing it for years,,, like almost from the start of bass fishing.  I no longer remember who told me or if maybe I read about it or what but it's never let me down as long as I hit them with the soda right from the start.  I've lost a few that I didn't notice were bleeding until I went to put another bass in the livewell and saw the water stained,,,, hunted down the bleeder and gave it a drink,,, some made it others didn't when that's happened.  I now pay better attention to them before they are put in the livewell or set free.

I've given up drinking any soda for the most part but still keep a couple cans in the boat just for this reason; it works!
