Usually around the beginning of April the smallies start to roam the flats at night. The water temps are around 40 so slow is the key but the bait is not known for slow.
Its a black spinnerbait with black Colorado blades and a black creature as a trailer. Just chunk it as far as possible and slow drag, ya not roll but drag it just fast enough to feel the blades kick.
If giant smallies are your goal then this is the trick to try. I have landed 3 7#'s and numerous 6's.

Right on zippy duck. That time of year just off the weed edges I will slow crank and then a one second pause and a quick little jerk and back to the slow retrieve. Had some success with that. Cheers. J.

I like it! Great tip!  ~c~

IMO, any serious bass angler, should have at least one all black spinnerbait in their tackle bag. Largemouths like black & spinnerbaits too!

What you're describing is my all time favorite muddy water lure, so your use is not the only situation such a lure can be used. For muddy water I like them big, with a heavy skirt. Adding a creature trailer should be similar in that the heavy skirt pushes a lot of water. Colorado blades put out a lot of vibration, and black is one of my go to colors for many lure types. Of course a spinnerbait can be fished as fast or slow as you need!  ;)
