Boat Trailer Tip

After backing my boat trailer off the end of two different concrete ramps and having to go into the water and lift my trailer while a friend pulled it out -- I cut out two wedges from a piece of 2"x12" pine and bolted them in place next to my trailer tires. There was already bolts/nuts holding the trailer steps to the frame so I used the same holes to bolt the pine wedge in place. I replaced the factory bolts with the same size bolts, only 1.5" longer and stainless steel. I re-used the factory self-locking nuts. Looking at the photo below you can see when I backed my tires off the end of the ramp the trailer would be setting on the frame and could not be moved forward because of the spring hanger. Now if the tires go off the ramp the trailer will rest on the pine wedges and I can easily drive the trailer out.

Very good idea and such a simple fix. I've watched guys fight this. I've been lucky enough not to have to. Even watched them blow tires when trying to jerk the trailer up and over the edge...

Thorn,
GREAT share!

We got a pond with a VERY STEEP launch.
And the drop is TWO-THREE FEET.
When the waters low, 6 out of ten launchers go over the ledge.
Only the experienced folks don't and they end up pushing boat off trailer in order not to get hung up.
Again, GREAT SHARE!

Now that is a neat idea and no need to drill into the trailer. Good job and thanks for posting it  ~c~ ~c~

Great tip. Now there real question is, why don't they put something on the trailer like this to begin with?

Kris

Take it from someone who got pissed and ripped the front hangars loose from the trailer and flipped the axle.  Luckily it was an aluminum boat and my Brother-in-Law was a mobile welder at the time.  I can imagine if it was my Ranger or Gambler.  That is a fantastic idea!

I agree it is a fantastic idea!  I have seen a couple of airboat trailers with skids similar to that in function on em, just never saw it on a regular trailer, and still don't understand why they don't do that.

I should have had this Years ago when I was younger and had no patience, I ripped the ball through the trailer tongue trying to get trailer off the ramp.
