Clear strands are made by adding no color dye to the poured plastic. You can see through the strands and they tend to disappear under water. Some reasons to use clear strands:

1) They show movement but no silouette in very clear water. The bass sees something but not clearly which draws it's attention. An example is a clear strand swim jig.
2) You want to add bulk but not color to a bait. More water movement with a smaller silouette.
3) Glow---clear strands have a glowing effect when fished just below the surface in dirty water. The glow is noticable both to the bass and angler.
4) Used between two colors to separate the colors with a gap between them.
A few years ago you saw few or no clear strand jigs on the market. I posted the clear swim jig on a site and now many makers have them.

Excellent post Wizard!!!  ~c~

Reason #1 is why we often fish clear topwaters, crankbaits and clear plastics on the glacial lakes we have up here.

I have some jigs from finesse size up to about 1/2 ounce that have clear or almost all clear skirts. Can't fish them any more with our lead laws but they did catch their share of fish.  :)

I agree, real good post!  ~c~

I use clear fibers on most white jigs I make. I don't get too concerned about the colors of the fibers, but it would make it appear as a smaller profile, so that's as good a reason as any when a smaller profile is desired!  ~c~
