Although it may be the wrong time of the year for most of the country just remember this little tip for next year, it will save you space, time and money.....

Go to Walmart and buy 2 cases of Dasani water. Make sure that it is Dasani specific because they make their plastic bottles at the perfect thickness. Once bought, go home and put as many bottles as you can in your freezer.

When you are packing your cooler in the morning to go fishing just pull as many bottles of water that you will need for the day out of the freezer. I promise you will still have ice at the end of the day. I never have to waste time at the convenience store in the morning OR spend wasted money on ice that eventually just gets dumped out. **And if you want to save some real cash just save the bottles and refill and refreeze.

1 is luck, but 2 is a pattern!

Cool idea. Have you ever had a bottle bust when the water expanded as it froze?

smart good tip.

Mike, if you can put in freezer standing up right, just loosen the cap so air can escape/get in and the fear of bursting is gone.
If you don't have the space you can fill bottles like a quarter full or a little more, again the fear is gone.
Another advantage to this is, if you take the bottle you intend to use first out, top it off and you now have ice water instantly.
I fill my cooler (when I use one) with bottles of frozen water instead of ice.
Just not having to drain water out a 1/2 dozen times an outting is great, not to mention how many lures I can buy without having to drop ten bucks an outting for ice. (says the monkey)  :)

When I get home I simply take the unused bottles back into freezer and refill the used, then back to the freezer.
Once bottles in freezer freeze you can stack them anyway you want freeing up space in freezer.
And smartbass is right, the Dasani bottles seem to keep shape and reusablity will out preform any other bottle and I've used many a brand of water.
Other bottles will work but not as long and the bottle itself seems to flex/crunch less with the Dasani bottles.

I have a six pack of Dasani that I used /reused ALL SUMMER LONG and the bottles seem to be brand new even after 70-100 outtings. Same bottles I got at beginning of season.
Oh I do refill mine after every trip, those that need it. Rest I just flip back into freezer.

Now for those that think they don't have room or a life PARTNER feels that way.
Get a small freezer for water only. If you have family they will quickly realize the advantages of the freeze first bottles and they also will get in the habit of swiping water from that freezer.
Think how often you've gotten a bottle or two for an outting just to find out that when you go for that bottle of water in the heat of the day, IT'S WARM or even HOT water your drinking.  :'(

Now for the math.
Sometimes we don't see how incremental costs can add up to a huge number. For example, if one were to drink just one 16.9-ounce bottle of water a day at a cost of say $.50 per bottle (good luck finding it at that cost), one would have spent $182.50 in a year. After 50 years one would have spent $9,125.00 on bottled water and used 1,800 plastic bottles. I don't know about you but I can think of a lot things I could do with $9,125.00 (says the monkey  lo). Imagine if one drank two bottles a day, or bought upscale or flavored waters at $1.00 each. That would double one's 50-year cost to $18,250.00. Or $365 a year. And that leaves out the cost of filling your cooler with ice. Now think of the savings.  ~sun

1.1 cu ft costs new around $150-$200.
2.5 cu ft new is around $250.

Check  rummage sales, Craigslist, ect. if you don't want to buy new. Heck, they can be found for under $50.
I've been using this method for YEARS due to being a brittle diabetic and always needing something like fruit ect. along because kayaking burns alot of carbs.

Again, smartbass great share!!!!

Yeah, Mike, AF is right. There is something about the way Dasani makes their bottles that theirs seem to work the best and IMO they have the best tasting water on the market. Most other bottles are too thin and the water in the bottle will thaw out rather quickly on HOT summer days.

I go to Walmart, grab a 24pack and they all go in the freezer and not once has a bottle exploded on me.

I love this idea because if you have sandwiches or anything else that you need to keep cool in your cooler the frozen Dasani bottles will keep them cool without having direct ice on them.

Works great.

Something to keep in mind fellas. Plastic bottles are great for this, I do the same thing. But after several uses they start to build bacteria in them even with freezing. The plastic harbors the bacteria easier than glass. I use mine 2-3 times and get a new case. You still save a ton of money over ice.
I will use the old ones for ice-only after I stop drinking out of them. I take a sharpy and color the cap black or red so I know not to drink it.

This is not a hobby for me, its a sick addiction. Now my son has the problem...isnt it great!!!

I would like to take this time to thank Bass for biteing my lures and bringing me joy.

Freezing and thawing plastic bottled water may have a link to carcinogens getting into our bodies. This has not been completely proven, however water that gets two hot in those bottles definitely leak
carcinogens into the water they contain. Please be careful'
I like fishing because it is not working

I was actually taking about when you drink from them, the backwash creates a pea tree dish of sorts. Sure you poor it out before you refill, but the tap water also has impurities and combined with the other bacteria can be bad.
It is true about the heat though. Keep your bottles out of the sun.
Hope this is helpful. Don't want anyone to get sick and miss work or worse a fishing trip.

Good points on the health issues. I actually don't reuse. My 1-time use bottles get recycled and I start with fresh brand new bottles on every outing.

Please note name.

Thought I knew the answer but needed to back it up
for myself.

This is what I found.

Now single use is always going to be safer.
Personally I refill because most bottled water is just Tap purified.
I have a water filter on my water system at home.
So I rinse them in warm/hot water, refill and freeze.
I do a fair amount of shorebusting and I'm a brittle juevinile (Type One) diabetic.
I always usually  :) have candy and water with me.
I do pack sandwiches when I kayak and as was said, the frozen bottles don't drown my snack.

Just thought I'd share.  :embarassed:

Have any of you considered an ice maker?

If you're really getting out there fairly frequently, you're probably going through a lot of ice anyways.  I bought my ice maker for about $200, and it basically uses $5 worth of electricity a month.  It's lasted several years, and I have definitely saved money, though that is probably because I was using it in huge coolers to ice down mahi mahi, tuna, wahoo, and such.
Yes, that is a gator in my profile picture, but I was trying to catch a bass, so it counts!

I refill gatorade bottles with water, freeze them and use them for ice purposes only. Ill even chuck them in the livewell on a hot day.

A little tip from our Hurricane people, a couple drops of chlorine bleach and two rinses kills the bacteria in those bottles very well.

We have gallon jugs that we keep for emergency purposes, empty and refill every 4 to 6 months, never had any problem with them growing any kind of nasty stuff in the stored water.

I keep ice bags and rob the ice maker from the frig in the house.  I can rob it a couple of times per week and still keep enough ice for my wife and me.  I also keep gatorade bottles and freeze water in them for the hot summer when it takes more ice and add them to the cooler along with the ice from the ice maker.  I'm a little afraid of drinking from a reused bottle.  Any bottle left out in the sun down here is likely to get pretty warm.

Get a gatorade bottle when youre done with it and fill it with pure spring water. Add a couple drops of your livewell conditioner at a rate consistent with your livewell. Fill almost full and freeze. Take your bottle and throw it in your livewell. When its starting to melt if you so desire you can take the lid off and as you recirculate it will constantly provide livewell treatment.

grumpydog

We bought a small (10 cu ft?) chest freezer that we store nothing but ice in.  Freezing different size bottles for different size coolers, and every time I think of it I will raid the ice maker on the fridge, fill gallon zip locks and throw them in the freezer.  That way I have loose ice when needed, along with gallon zip locks to store cleaned filets in on the way home.

Now that's a great idea! ~c~

Same here, quart Gatorade bottles are pretty good ice cubes.
