6-18-05 Grand Kankakee Marsh and ditches/creeks

Went down to the Marsh today, struggled to find locations to fish...the place was overrun with "once in a blue moon" anglers, and people were riding horses all over the place...I managed a few short hits, but decided to search out some new water...

Fished a feeder creek that connects directly to the river and walked until I found a log that went all the way across and slowed the current enough for duckweed to collect...cast a 4" frog pattern weightless tube rigged texas style on a 2/0 Tru-turn hook. Worked the thickest edges of the duckweed where it met the open water, keeping the tube on top of the duckweed - managed 3 small bass, biggest one was 14"...walked down to another likely location, and got the backlash from Hades...couldn't be undone...slipped on a bank and immediately my back started to hurt, so I hightailed it home. Still, all in all it was a nice afternoon.

Nature Observations: saw several orioles and goldfinches flitting around like they were having a great time, watched a great blue heron catch a frog, water snake, great horned owl, turkey vultures, but unusual...saw not one single turtle today, usually I see dozens of em, but not one today...

Another great report Fish sounds like it got a little crowded in the marsh today :(

Nice nature report too. Wonder what happened to the turtles today.

this is really a cold front...I realize if feels nice out, 71 but last week it was in the 90's so that's a 20+ degree shift in temp...and today there was a fairly stiff North wind blowing too.

Maybe things will be different tomorrow.
