So here is my tip on the broken trolling motor cable, I broke one this last weekend while ledge fishing in 3 foot seas on KY lake and was basically confined to bays but I was able to finish out my limit and put one almost six in the boat and win the tournament just because I was able to rig up my trolling motor to get me through the last 5 hours of a tournament day. What I did was tie a rope to my trolling motor head and take that line and make it off to the starboard cleat up front on the boat, making sure the head of the trolling motor was pointed a little bit to starboard. Next I attached another line to the head and pulled it over the front port side of the trolling motor and boat. I would pull it tight and stand on it to keep the boat going straight then slide the rope back with my foot back to turn the head to port or let my foot up a little to let it go back to starboard. It was a little pain but like I said it got me through the day and we came out with the win.

I've had that happen before. It was during a Wed. night tournament we had a good take off number and when we got to the first spot I let the trolling motor down and stepped on the pedal and snap. It worked on one side but it wouldn't turn the other. My partner said well I guess we might as well go home. I said you fish and I'll work the trolling motor were not quitting. I used a paddle to turn the motor and as long as i didn't go past the transfer point it worked well I wanted to fish too and I thought about how I could fix it. It popped into my head that if I put a loop in the end of a rope and put that on the skeg of the trolling motor the wrapped the rope around the shaft of the motor then I cold use the foot pedal to turn to the right then I could use the rope to turn to the left.
I rigged up the rope and ran it through the front cleat dropped the motor down stood up threw the rope over my shoulder and started fishing. About five minutes later my partner said I thought we were done that was some pretty quick thinking and I doubted that wold work. I've got to give you some credit you come up with some sh@t but it works.
Two other guys from our club were fishing and we crossed paths on the water and they said what's up with the rope? Gave them the story and they chuckled. Fast forward two weeks to Smithland pool on the ohio river. Went into Lusk creek and came upon the same two guys sittin on one of Don's favorite spots. Gary looked at my and said see anything that looks familiar? I looked up at Don and over his shoulder was a rope and he said I got the Idea from you thanks.  lo
